CHAPTER 15TYPEThe TYPE option is used in conjunction with the FILE option todescribe the contents of the file named using the FILE option. It has thefollowing settings:INDIVIDUAL Data matrix where rows represent observations andcolumns represent variablesCOVARIANCE A lower triangular covariance matrix read row wiseCORRELATION A lower triangular correlation matrix read row wiseFULLCOV A full covariance matrix read row wiseFULLCORR A full correlation matrix read row wiseMEANS MeansSTDEVIATIONS Standard deviationsMONTECARLO A list of the names of the data sets to be analyzedIMPUTATION A list of the names of the imputed data sets to beanalyzedINDIVIDUALThe default for the TYPE option is INDIVIDUAL. The TYPE option isnot required if individual data are being analyzed where rows representobservations and columns represent variables.SUMMARY DATAThe TYPE option is required when summary data such as a covariancematrix or a correlation matrix are analyzed. The TYPE option has sixsettings related to the analysis of summary data. They are:COVARIANCE, CORRELATION, FULLCOV, FULLCORR, MEANS,and STDEVIATIONS. Summary data must reside in a free formatexternal ASCII file. The number of observations must be specified usingthe NOBSERVATIONS option of the DATA command. When summary data are analyzed and one or more dependent variablesare binary or ordered categorical (ordinal), only a correlation matrix canbe analyzed. When summary data are analyzed and all dependentvariables are continuous, a covariance matrix is usually analyzed. Insome cases, a correlation matrix can be analyzed.456
