CHAPTER 14variances in a model with multiple groups where u1, u2, u3, u4, and u5are observed categorical dependent variables.MODEL:MODEL g2:f BY u1-u5;u1-u5*2;In the above example, the residual variances of the latent responsevariables of the observed categorical dependent variables in g1 are fixedat one as the default. Starting values are given for the free residualvariances in g2.DATA IN MULTIPLE GROUP ANALYSISOne difference between single group analysis and multiple groupanalysis is related to the data to be analyzed. For individual data, thedata for all groups can be stored in one data set or in different data sets.If the data are stored in one data set, the data set must include a variablethat identifies the group to which each observation belongs. Forsummary data, all data must be stored in the same data set.INDIVIDUAL DATA, ONE DATA SETIf individual data for several groups are stored in one data set, the dataset must include a variable that identifies the group to which eachobservation belongs. The name of this variable is specified using theGROUPING option of the VARIABLE command. Only one groupingvariable can be specified. If the groups to be analyzed are a combinationof more than one variable, for example, gender and ethnicity, a singlegrouping variable can be created using the DEFINE command. Anexample of how to specify the GROUPING option is:GROUPING IS gender (1 = male 2 = female); The information in parentheses after the grouping variable name assignslabels to the values of the grouping variable found in the data set. In theexample above, observations with the variable gender equal to 1 areassigned the label male, and observations with the variable gender equalto 2 are assigned the label female. These labels are used in groupspecificMODEL commands to specify differences between the overallmodel and the group-specific models. If an observation has a value for430
