CHAPTER 9In the within part of the model, the | symbol is used in conjunction withTYPE=RANDOM to name and define the random slope variables in themodel. The name on the left-hand side of the | symbol names therandom slope variable. The statement on the right-hand side of the |symbol defines the random slope variable. Random slopes are definedusing the ON option. In the first | statement, the random slope s1 isdefined by the linear regression of the factor fw on the individual-levelcovariate x1. In the second | statement, the random slope s2 is definedby the linear regression of the factor fw on the individual-level covariatex2. The within-level residual variance of f1 is estimated as the default. In the between part of the model, the ON statement describes the linearregressions of fb, s1, and s2 on the cluster-level covariate w. Theresidual variances of fb, s1, and s2 are estimated as the default. Theresiduals are not correlated as the default. The default estimator for thistype of analysis is maximum likelihood with robust standard errors. TheESTIMATOR option of the ANALYSIS command can be used to selecta different estimator. An explanation of the other commands can befound in Examples 9.1 and 9.6.258
