MODEL CommandFollowing is an example of how to specify a random slope using the |symbol:s | y ON x;where s is a random slope in the regression of y on x where y is acontinuous dependent variable and x is an independent variable. Bothdependent and independent variables can be latent or observed variables.Dependent variables cannot appear on the BETWEEN statement of theVARIABLE command. The asterisk (*) convention is specified as follows:s* | y ON x;where the asterisk (*) indicates that the random slope variable s hasvariation on both the within and between levels.A random slope variable can refer to more than one slope by being usedon the left-hand side of more than one | statement. In this case, therandom slope variables are the same. For example,s1 | y1 ON x1;s1 | y2 ON x2;defines the random slope, s1, to be the same in the regressions of y1 onx1 and y2 on x2.Another example is,s2 | y1 ON x1 x2;which defines the random slope, s2, to be the same in the regressions ofy1 on x1 and y1 on x2.In the following example,s3 | y1 y2 ON x1 x2 x3;the six slopes in the regressions of y1 on x1, x2, and x3 and y2 on x1,x2, and x3 are the same.609
