As many as 94% of the participating teachers indicated awillingness to participate in the program again. 52All teachers (100%) who responded to a survey about the Riverside Harvest of theMonth program (RHM-CA) reported that the educational and promotional materials, including the Harvest of the Month calendar, teacher meetings, monthlynewsletters, farmers’ market tour, farmer in the classroom sessions, and monthlytaste tests were “very useful” or “fairly useful.” 53 When asked if they plan to repeatany of the Harvest of the Month activities in the future, 50% of the teachersanswered yes, and 25% said no because of factors not associated with the curriculum, such as their unavailability for teaching in the coming year.Based on a survey and focus group discussion, all teachers from Edmunds Elementaryand Middle School participating in the BTV-VT program reportedan increase in awareness about food, farm and nutrition issues, as well as beliefthat lessons on food, farms and nutrition would affect children’s long-term foodchoices; 71% reported an improvement in their own diets as a result of the program.14,46Comparative Research: Factors Affecting Nutrition and Physical Activity in SchoolsSwimming upstream: Faculty and staff members from urban middle schools in low-incomecommunities describe their experience implementing nutrition and physical activityinitiatives.
