Moreover, the classification <strong>of</strong>an <strong>in</strong>stitution as juku or terakoya has been revised <strong>in</strong> some cases,where <strong>in</strong>formation about the curriculum suggested this. <strong>The</strong>dist<strong>in</strong>ction between the two is far from clear-cut, and manyauthors do not attempt it and treat juku and terakoya together. Buthowever difficult it may be to decide <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual cases whetherwe are deal<strong>in</strong>g with a juku or a terakoya, overall there was adifference between <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g only elementaryeducation and those provid<strong>in</strong>g the possibility for further study.<strong>The</strong> difference became more marked when the terakoya wereabsorbed <strong>in</strong>to the national school system as elementary schools
