In addition, the population <strong>in</strong> Tokyorose from 800,000 <strong>in</strong> the mid-1870s to 1,000,000 <strong>in</strong> the 1880s, ma<strong>in</strong>lyas a result <strong>of</strong> migration <strong>in</strong>to Tokyo, and this also <strong>in</strong>creased thedemand for school<strong>in</strong>g.How many juku were there <strong>in</strong> Tokyo? NKSS lists 123, but therewere probably more. Nakura Eisaburō, analys<strong>in</strong>g theapplications up to 1873 <strong>in</strong> the metropolitan archives, counted 1,141 juku <strong>of</strong> various types (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g terakoya) for 1873 andanalysed 1,015 <strong>of</strong> them (exclud<strong>in</strong>g branch schools). Of these, 758<strong>of</strong>fered elementary education, the others specialist studies,ma<strong>in</strong>ly kangaku, <strong>Japan</strong>ese or Western studies or a comb<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong>these. 20 <strong>The</strong> kangaku juku formed the second largest group <strong>of</strong>these specialist juku; 60, compared to 83 for different branches <strong>of</strong>Western <strong>Learn<strong>in</strong>g</strong> (yōgaku). <strong>The</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g table shows whenthese kangaku juku were established: many were established afterthe Restoration; until 1870 their number <strong>in</strong>creased more thanacademies for Western learn<strong>in</strong>g; from 1871 onwards academiesfor Western learn<strong>in</strong>g show the biggest <strong>in</strong>crease. 21Table 2: Kangaku juku <strong>in</strong> Tokyo accord<strong>in</strong>g to the year they were opened*Note: 57 <strong>in</strong> the Tokyo wards, 3 <strong>in</strong> the districts.Source.
