Language and Multicultural Requirement1. The language requirement can be met by satisfyingGeneral Education category C3a with a grade of “C” orbetter. Students who are G.E. certified in Section C muststill meet the language requirement for graduation andmay do so either by passing a C3a course with a gradeof “C” or better or by demonstrating proficiency throughexamination. Students will also receive credit for havingadvanced proficiency in a language other than English. Thisproficiency can be demonstrated by taking and earninga grade of “C” or better in an upper-division language(e.g., Spanish) class or via an examination that assesses thestudent’s language skills (speaking, listening, reading andwriting) on a variety of informal and formal topics. By takingand earning a grade of “C” or better in an upper-divisionlanguage course or by passing an examination, studentsfulfill the graduation exit requirement for language. Forpurposes of the General Education requirement, however,students passing by examination receive content credit butnot unit credit.2. The multicultural requirement can be met by satisfyingGeneral Education category C3b with a grade of “C”or better.(SP 03-27)Graduation WritingAssessment Requirement (GWAR)The Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement will besatisfied through the completion of 9 units of Upper-DivisionInterdisciplinary General Education courses, which are writingintensive.(SP 02-22)GraduationGraduation Information andApplication Process for theBachelor’s DegreeTo qualify for graduation students must complete all requirementsfor the bachelor’s degree by the official graduation date listedin the schedule of classes. Graduation is not automatic upon thecompletion of requirements. Students who intend to graduatemust take the initiative and should follow the steps listed below.While students are ultimately responsible for completing alldegree requirements, assistance is available through facultyadvisement, the Advising Center and Graduation Evaluationsin the Records & Registration office. It is important that studentsmeet regularly with an advisor to avoid graduation problemsand delays.Application for GraduationThe Application for Degree and Diploma and filing feeare required for students expecting to graduate, and providethem with an official graduation evaluation of degreerequirements for the baccalaureate degree. Students qualifyingfor graduation in the terms designated by the Policy onCommencement Participation and who have applied tograduate by the published deadlines may participate in theannual commencement ceremony. Commencement participationdoes not constitute proof of the successful completion of degreerequirements. The application for degree is available on theRecords & Registration webpage and at the Enrollment Center inSage Hall. Application deadlines are published in the Scheduleof Classes and on the CI Web site.
