Applicants seeking a second bachelor’s degreeshould submit the undergraduate application for admissionunless specifically requested to do otherwise. Applicants whocompleted undergraduate degree requirements and graduatedthe preceding term are also required to complete and submit anapplication and the $55 nonrefundable application fee. Sinceapplicants for post-baccalaureate programs may be limited tothe choice of a single campus on each application, re-routingto alternate campuses or later changes of campus choice arenot guaranteed. To be assured of initial consideration by morethan one campus, it is necessary to submit separate applications(including fees) to each. Applications submitted by way ofwww.csumentor.edu are expected unless submission of anelectronic application is impossible. An electronic version of the<strong>CSU</strong> graduate application is available online at http://www.csumentor.edu.Application AcknowledgmentOn-time applicants may expect to receive an acknowledgmentfrom the campuses to which they have applied within two tofour weeks of filing the application. The notice may also includea request that applicants submit additional records necessaryto evaluate academic qualifications. Applicants may beassured of admission if the evaluation of relevant qualificationsindicates that applicants meet <strong>CSU</strong> admission requirements,and in the case of admission impaction, campus requirementsfor admission to an impacted program. Unless specific writtenapproval/confirmation is received, an offer of admission is nottransferable to another term or to another campus.Hardship PetitionsThe campus has established procedures for consideration ofqualified applicants who would be faced with extreme hardshipif not admitted. Petitioners should write the campus Admissionsoffice regarding specific policies governing hardship admission.Undergraduate Admission RequirementsFreshman RequirementsGenerally, first-time freshman applicants will qualify for regularadmission if they meet the following requirements:Filing PeriodEach non-impacted campus accepts applicationsuntil capacities are reached. Many campuses limitundergraduate admission in an enrollment categorydue to overall enrollment limits. If applying after theinitial filing period, consult the campus Admissionsoffice for current information. Have graduated from high school, have earned aCertificate of General Education Development (GED)or have passed the California High School ProficiencyExamination; and2. Have a qualifiable minimum eligibility index (see section onEligibility Index on page 32); and3. Have completed with grades of C or better each of thecourses in the comprehensive pattern of college preparatorysubject requirements also known as the “a-g” pattern (see“Subject Requirements”).Eligibility Index – The eligibility index is the combination ofthe high school grade point average and scores on either theACT or the SAT. Grade point averages (GPA) are based ongrades earned in courses taken during the final three years ofhigh school. Included in calculation of GPA are grades earnedin all college preparatory “a-g” subject requirements, and bonuspoints for approved honors courses. Up to eight semestersof honors courses taken in the last three years of high school,including up to two approved courses taken in the 10th gradecan be accepted. Each unit of A in an honors course willreceive a total of 5 points; B, 4 points; and C, 3 points.A <strong>CSU</strong> Eligibility Index (EI) can be calculated by multiplyinga grade point average by 800 and adding your total scoreon the mathematics and critical reading scores of the SAT.Students who took the ACT, multiply your the grade pointaverage by 200 and add 10 times the ACT composite score.Persons who are California high school graduates (or residentsof California for tuition purposes) need a minimum index of2900 using the SAT or 694 using the ACT. The Eligibility IndexTable illustrates several combinations of required test scoresand averages. For admission to terms during the 2009-2010college year, the University has no current plans to includethe writing scores from either of the admissions tests in thecomputation of the <strong>CSU</strong> Eligibility Index.Persons who neither graduated from a California high schoolnor are a resident of California for tuition purposes need aminimum index of 3502 (SAT) or 842 (ACT). Graduates ofsecondary schools in foreign countries must be judged to haveacademic preparation and abilities equivalent to applicantseligible under this section. An applicant with a grade pointaverage of 3.00 or above (3.61 for nonresidents) is notrequired to submit test scores. However, all applicants foradmission are urged to take the SAT or ACT and provide thescores of such tests to each <strong>CSU</strong> to which they seek admission.Campuses use these test results for advising and placementpurposes and may require them for admission to impactedwww.csuci.edu • California State University <strong>Channel</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> • 2011 - 2012 Catalog29Admission Procedures and Policies2011 – 2012
