The scope of the disciplineis as broad and diverse as social life itself. The subject matterof sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostilemob, from crime to cults, from the divisions of inequities ofrace, ethnicity, nationality, gender, and class to the beliefs ofa common culture, and from work to leisure and sport. TheSociology major at CI is designed to give students the ability toanalyze the world around them, its people and institutions, fromlocal and particular issues that affect people in Ventura Countyand the region to national and international questions. Theprogram stresses the mission of CI: we value interdisciplinarityand we emphasize the multicultural, global perspective whichis the hallmark of Channel Islands programs. Graduates ofthe Sociology Program will be well-trained in the empiricalmethodology of the discipline to engage in the systematic studyof human social interaction and institutions. The Sociology majorwill prepare students for further study and for entry into a varietyof professional paths.CareersA BA degree in sociology can lead to career opportunitiesin law, management, marketing, public relations, journalism,social work, urban and environmental planning, public services,teaching, corrections, counseling, human resources, state andfederal employment, and other professions. Sociology graduatesare employed in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors.Many business, political science, pre-law and other studentstake sociology as a minor or a second major because of theapplicability of sociology to their chosen professions. Graduatestudy can also lead to careers within the academy doingteaching and research, as well as careers in applied researchin social service, public planning, education, mental health,business, and various governmental settings.Program Learning OutcomesThe Sociology Program at CI has stated goals and learningobjectives (see http://sociology.csuci.edu/redesign/learningobjectives.htm).Students will demonstrate:• Understanding the role of evidence in the social sciencesand how to conduct both quantitative and qualitativesociological research;• Effective communication, written and oral, about the field ofsociology;• Substantive knowledge of core areas and controversies insociology and the ability to think critically about them;• Understanding the history and evolution of the discipline ofsociology; and• Preparedness for professional or graduate study beyondthe B.A. degree, or for entry into a career in the socialsciences.204 www.csuci.edu • California State University Channel Islands • 2011 - 2012 Catalog
