UNIV 110 CRITICAL THINKING ANDTHE UNIVERSITY MISSION (3)Three hours lecture per weekThis course teaches critical thinkingskills, including forms of logic, byintroducing students to the fourcomponents of our mission. Throughspecial presentations, guest lectures,and small discussion sections. Studentswill apply various types of argumentsand understand the relationship oflanguage to logic in analyzing issues andopportunities specific to multiculturalism,internationalism, interdisciplinarity andcommunity engagement.GenEd: A3UNIV 150 FIRST YEAR SEMINAR (4)Four hours lecture per weekCorequisites: ENGL 102/103, ENGL105 or ENGL 106This freshman seminar integrates the CImission and critical thinking with strategiesto promote student success. Studentswill develop literacies (quantitative,information, scientific, financial, cultural),communication skills (oral and written),and multicultural perspectives (in nationaland international contexts).The seminarpromotes success in major core coursesand/or introduces students who have notdeclared a major to CI’s interdisciplinaryways of knowing.GenEd: A3, C3BUNIV 300 UNIVERSITY LIFE ANDCOLLEGE SUCCESS FORTRANSFER STUDENTS (1)One hour seminar per weekFacilitates transfer student success onthe CI campus by assisting students intheir transition to CI; provides supportin developing an individualized planfor personal, social, academic, andprofessional success. Introduces transferstudents to university life, the structure andpolicies of the University. Developmentof strategies and skills to help ensurestudent’s success in college. Introductionto campus academic and studentresources, major and career exploration,academic expectations and resourcesand skills necessary for success.Student Option: Graded or Credit/No CreditUNIV 391 UNITED STATES TRAVELSTUDY EXPERIENCE (1-3)Two to six hours activity per weekProvides an opportunity for students toearn credit for travel and study withinthe United States. Students study atopic or discipline associated with thetravel destination. Students participate inuniversity sponsored travel that facilitatesor enhances specialized study underthe direction of faculty from a campusacademic program. Students arerequired to synthesize the results of theircourse experience in a written, visual orpresentation format. Repeatable for creditup to 9 units. A lab fee is required.UNIV 392 INTERNATIONALEXPERIENCE (1-3)Provides an opportunity for studentsto earn credit for travel and study in acountry outside the US, where the studentis immersed in a foreign culture. Withfaculty advisor approval, students mayparticipate in a university-sponsoredtrip abroad or a personal trip abroad.Requires an approved plan of study bythe faculty advisor prior to the experience.Repeatable for credit.GenEd: C3BUNIV 491 MODEL UNITED NATIONS (1)Two hours of activity per weekPrerequisite: POLS 490Special Topics: UNFor students participating in the ModelUnited Nations program. Studentsresearch and roleplay positions of variouscountries on selected global issues.Repeatable up to 5 units.Graded Credit/No CreditUNIV 493 SERVICE LEARNINGAT THE ZOO (1-3)One to three hours activity per weekPrerequisites: BIOL/BUS/ECON/EDUC342 and Consent of instructorWorking with local zoos individuals orteams of students will engage in servicelearning projects where they will applyskills and competencies acquired intheir academic programs to issues andchallenges facing modern zoos.Student Option: Graded or Credit/No CreditSame as BIOL 493, BUS 493,ECON 493, EDUC 493UNIV 498 FACULTY-STUDENTCOLLABORATIVE RESEARCH (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisite: Consent of instructorStudents will engage in the creation oforiginal intellectual or creative work bycollaborating with a faculty member on aresearch project of the faculty member’schoosing. Student activities will includereading scholarly publications, researchor creative activities both independentlyand with the faculty mentor, attendingworkshops, writing, and preparation of aconference presentation.
