General EducationCategories and CoursesCategory A: Communication in theEnglish Language and Critical Thinking9 unitsCourses in Category A approach communication as symbolicinteraction, examining the formulation and complexities of thoseinteractions. Students learn how to discover, evaluate, andreport information, how to reason inductively and deductively,how to distinguish fact from judgment or opinion. Courses inCategories A1 and A2 emphasize the content and form ofboth oral and written English. They explore the psychologicalbasis and the social significance of communication, as wellas the ways language works in diverse situations. In the sciences,the intent is to present the principles and concepts which formthe foundations of living or non-living systems. The focus of allcourses in Category B is on the presentation and evaluationof evidence and argument, the appreciation of use/misuseof data, and the organization of information in quantitative,technological, or other formal systems. Students are introducedto the principles and practices that underscore mathematicaland scientific inquiry (logic, precision, hypothesis generationand evaluation, experimentation, and objectivity) and gainan understanding of the process by which new knowledgeis created, organized, accessed, and synthesized.
