Examineenvironmental, biological, and medicalapplications of the analysis techniques.CHEM 251 QUANTITATIVE ANALYSISLABORATORY (1)Three hours of laboratory per weekPrerequisites: CHEM 122 with a grade ofC or betterCorequisite: CHEM 250A laboratory course designed toprovide students with an exposure tothe techniques used in the quantificationof inorganic, organic, and biologicalspecies from samples using gravimetricand volumetric analyses, potentiometrictitrations, atomic absorption spectrometry,UV-visible spectroscopy, GC, and GC/MS. Lab fee required.CHEM 301 ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY -ATMOSPHERE AND CLIMATE (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: CHEM 122 with a grade ofC or betterAn introductory course to the chemistryof the atmosphere. The focus is thefundamental natural chemical processesof the atmosphere, as well as theanthropogenic effects on this system. These include climate change and othercurrent topics of environmental interestand the science behind these processes.CHEM 302 ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY -SOIL AND WATER (4)Three hours lecture per week andThree hours laboratory per weekPrerequisites: CHEM 122 with a grade ofC or betterExamines the environmental chemistryof the geosphere and the hydrosphere.Natural and anthropogenic effects on theenvironment in these systems, includingeffects on living organisms, hazardouswaste and its disposal, and measuresto alleviate and prevent environmentalproblems will be discussed. Includes alaboratory for experiments analyzingwater, soil, and tissue samples forpollutants.CHEM 305 COMPUTER APPLICATIONSIN CHEMISTRY (1)Three hours of laboratory per week.Prerequisites: CHEM 122 with a grade ofC or betterThis course will introduce the useof computer applications to solvechemical problems and present scientificinformation. Topics include: on-linejournals and literature searches, readingand understanding the scientific literature, computer modeling of molecules, andwebsite development. Lab fee required.GenEd: B4CHEM 311 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: CHEM 122 with a grade ofC or betterThe structure and reactions of simpleorganic molecules and spectroscopictechniques (NMR, GC-MS, IR, and UVvisible)used to characterize molecules.CHEM 312 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY ILABORATORY (1)Three hours laboratory per weekPrerequisites: CHEM 311 (or takenconcurrently ) with a grade of C or betterA laboratory course designed toprovide students with an exposure to thetechniques and instrumentation (NMR,GC, GC-MS, LC, IR, and UV-visible)used to purify and characterize organicmolecules resulting from organic reactions.Lab fee required.CHEM 313 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IPROBLEM SOLVING (1)One hour discussion per weekCorequisite: CHEM 311Interactive problem-solving session forstudents in CHEM 311 where studentswork in small groups on problems relatedto the content in CHEM 311.Graded Credit/No CreditCHEM 314 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY II (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: CHEM 311 with a grade ofC or betterAn examination of the structure, reactions, and spectroscopy of organic compoundscontaining one or more functional groups, and the structures and reactions ofbiologically relevant molecules.CHEM 315 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IILABORATORY (1)Three hours laboratory per weekPrerequisites: CHEM 311, CHEM 312,and CHEM 314 (or taken concurrently)with grades of C or betterA laboratory course designed toprovide students with experience insingle-step and multi-step syntheses andcharacterization of organic molecules withhands-on access to instrumentation (NMR,GC, GC-MS, LC, IR, and UV-visible). Labfee required.CHEM 316 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IIPROBLEM SOLVING (1)One hour discussion per weekCorequisite: CHEM 314Interactive problem-solving session forstudents enrolled in CHEM 314 wherestudents work in small groups on problemsrelated to the content in CHEM 314.Graded Credit/No CreditCHEM 318 BIOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: CHEM 311 with a grade ofC or betterAn integrated Organic Chemistry II andBiochemistry course for non-chemists. Thetopics covered in this course include: thestructure and synthesis of sugars, aminoacids, DNA, RNA, proteins; enzymecatalysis and inhibition; and the reactionsinvolved in biosynthetic and metabolicpathways. Chem 318 will not count forcredit in the Chemistry major or minor.CHEM 330 THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE:NONWESTERN ORIGINS ANDTHE WESTERN REVOLUTION (3)Three hours lecture per weekA survey of scientific history from 2000BCE to the present that considers scienceas a set of made, lost and found ideasand technologies. Fields of inquiry areexamined by tracing their historical andcultural trajectories through the African,Arab, Babylonian, Chinese, Egyptian,Greek, Indian, Incan, Japanese, Mayanand Sumerian worlds.Same as HIST 330GenEd: B1, InterdisciplinaryCHEM 335 THE CHEMISTRY OFTHE KITCHEN (3)Two hours lecture per weekTwo hours activity per weekAn overview of the molecules infoods and the chemical reactionsthat occur during the preparation offoods.
