Development of skillsin managing the care of patients inthe acute care setting and/or in thecommunity in order to maintain maximumlevels of function, manage symptoms,and increase quality of life. Focuses onnursing case management models, rolesand strategies used for managing highriskclient populations and for providingcomprehensive care coordination,brokerage, monitoring, dischargeplanning, client/family advocacy, andnursing interventions.NRS 421 NURSING CARE OF THECOMPLEX CLIENT ACROSS THECONTINUUM LABORATORY (3)Nine hours lab per weekPrerequisites: NRS 222, NRS 223 andNRS 310 Admission to the ClinicalNursing Program.Corequisites: NRS 420 and NRS 401Application of nursing theory,management skills, and concepts in thedelivery of nursing care to acutely ill/chronically ill adults with increasinglycomplex medical-surgical problems.Provision of nursing care to members ofa high-risk population in the acute caresetting from admission through dischargeand in the home setting. Students will identifypopulations within the community andassist them to maintain their optimum levelof health.NRS 460 NURSING LEADERSHIP ANDPROFESSIONAL ISSUES (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: NRS 350 and NRS 352Corequisite: NRS 461Examines organizational theory andmanagement practices applied to healthcare systems and contemporary issuesaffecting the delivery of health care anddiscipline and professional practice ofnursing. Explores the role of the nursemanager as leader and change agent inthe delivery of care to patient groups andcommunities within complex and diversehealth care settings. Provides an overviewof health care informatics systems,electronic health records, databases andinformation literacy.NRS 461 NURSING LEADERSHIPLABORATORY (3)Nine hours laboratory per weekPrerequisites: NRS 350 and NRS 352Corequisite: NRS 460Clinical application of organizationaltheory and management practicesin health care settings. Experience inworking with health care informaticssystems and data bases. Operationalizesthe role of the nurse manager as leaderand change agent in the delivery of careto patient groups and communities withincomplex and diverse health care settings.NRS 488 PREPARATION FORPROFESSIONAL NURSINGLICENSURE (2)Two hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: NRS 222 and NRS 223Corequisites: NRS 420, NRS 421Reviews the essentials of assessment,nursing diagnosis, goal setting,implementation and evaluation in multiplehealth deviations and across the life span.Assessment of the student’s basic nursingknowledge will be performed using astandardized nursing examination. Clinicaldecision making in a variety of patientcare situations and case scenarios withemphasis on utilization of the steps of thenursing care process.Graded Credit/No CreditNRS 493 SENIOR NURSING INTERNSHIP (2)Two hours activity per weekPrerequisites: NRS 491 and Consent ofProgram DirectorOptional career preparation refinementcourse which provides the student withadditional work experience.
