2011 – 2012Course DescriptionsSPAN 460 MASTERPIECES OFSPANISH LITERATURE (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: SPAN 310 or Consent ofinstructorAdvanced literature course designed todevelop reading, writing, and literaryanalysis. Focuses on selections ofpoetry, prose, and theater from literarymasterpieces of Spanish Literature.Lectures, discussions, and analysis of thetexts will be the center of class activities.SPAN 461 MASTERPIECES OF LATINAMERICAN LITERATURE (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: SPAN 301 or Consent ofinstructorAdvanced literature course that exploresmajor Latin American Literary works.Enhances students’ knowledge of LatinAmerican Literature, history and culture.Develops critical thinking and improvestudents’ reading and writing skills andSpanish language vocabulary.SPAN 462 MODERN MEXICANLITERATURE (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: SPAN 302 and SPAN 310Advanced literature course that exploresmajor literary works of modern Mexicostarting with those that emerged from theRevolution of 1910. Includes the genres ofpoetry, prose, drama, and essay.SPAN 490 SPECIAL TOPICS IN SPANISH (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisite: Consent of instructorSelected topics on Spanish language,linguistics, Hispanic cultures, andliteratures. Repeatable for up to 9 units.SPAN 499 CAPSTONE IN SPANISH (2)Two hours seminar per weekPrerequisites: Senior standing as a Spanishmajor or Consent of instructorStudents design and complete a projectthat integrates prior course work withthe University’s mission. The project mayinvolve an interdisciplinary activity, aservice learning experience, and reflect amulticultural or international perspective.Special EducationSPED 345 INDIVIDUALS WITHDISABILITIES IN SOCIETY (3)Three hours lecture per weekMajor types of disabilities andgiftedness, including definitions, causes,characteristics, and educationalimplications. Repeatable.Student Option: Graded or Credit/No CreditSPED 530 TYPICAL AND ATYPICALDEVELOPMENT (3)Three hours lecture per weekFocus on typical and atypicaldevelopment from the prenatal stageto adulthood and the implicationsfor learning. Emphasis on atypicaldevelopment associated with variousdisabilities and risk conditions. Resilienceand protective factors and their impact onlearning. Theories of typical and atypicalchild development, including educationaland home settings, schools, communities,and culture are integrated.SPED 541 FOUNDATIONS OFSPECIAL EDUCATION (3)Three hours lecturer weekPrerequisites: Admission to EducationSpecialist Credential Program and SPED345, ENGL 475, SPED 530, EDUC 512Ethical standards, professional practices,laws, regulations and policies related tothe provision of services to individualswith disabilities and their families.Models, theories and practices thatform the basis for special educationpractice. History of special education andcontributions of culturally diverse groups.Development of professional perspectivethat reflects status of special educationservices in society.SPED 542 MANAGING LEARNINGENVIRONMENTS (3)Three hours lecture/discussion per weekPrerequisites: Admission to EducationSpecialist: Credential ProgramCorequisites: SPED 562 or SPED 570 orSPED 580Functional assessment of behavior,behavior management strategies,communication styles and their impact onlearning; laws, regulations, and strategiesfor promoting positive and self-regulatorybehavior in students.
