attempted or in all units attempted at CI falls below the following:as a freshman, 1.50; as a sophomore, 1.70; as a junior,1.85;as a senior, 1.95. Students’ records will be evaluated fordisqualification at the end of each semester. Students cannot beplaced on probation for the first time at CI and be disqualifiedin the same semester. However, students who have previouslybeen on probation at CI and fall below the GPA listed abovewill be academically disqualified, even if the probation anddisqualification semesters are non-consecutive. A student mayappeal disqualification no later than three weeks before the startof the semester following the disqualification. Appeals shouldbe made to the office of the Provost or Designee. Appealswill be decided by the Academic Appeals Board. Typicalgrounds for a successful appeal include significant improvementtowards meeting the GPA requirements and/or extraordinarycircumstances beyond the student’s control, as determined by theAcademic Appeals Board. A successful petition of appeal fordisqualification will result in the student remaining on academicprobation. Students who appeal unsuccessfully will need toapply for reinstatement as specified in the Policy on Reinstatementif they wish to continue at CI.(SP04-36)Administrative-Academic ProbationAn undergraduate or graduate student may be placed onadministrative-academic probation for any of the followingreasons:• Withdrawal from more than half the units in which a studentis enrolled in two successive semesters or in any threesemesters (withdrawals directly associated with a medicalcondition are not included);• Repeated failure to progress toward the stated degreeobjective; or• Failure to comply, after due notice, with an academicrequirement or regulation.Probationary students will be advised of their status by letterat the end of the semester. The letter will include conditions forremoval from probation and the circumstances that would lead todisqualification.Administrative-Academic DisqualificationA student who has been placed on administrative-academicprobation may be disqualified if:• The conditions for removal of academic-administrativeprobation are not met within the specified period;• The student becomes subject to academic probation whileon administrative-academic probation; and• The student becomes subject to administrative-academicprobation for the same or similar reason to a previousplacement on academic-administrative probation, althoughnot currently in such status.When such action is taken, the student will receive writtennotification including an explanation of the basis for the actionand the process for appeal.(SP02-04)ReinstatementIn order to be considered for reinstatement to CI, a disqualifiedstudent must demonstrate academic ability by completingadditional coursework. All classes taken must be applicablefor degree credit at CI. After eliminating the grade-pointdeficiency, the student may petition the Academic AppealsBoard for reinstatement. The student must submit the petition forreinstatement no later than three weeks before the beginningof the semester that the student intends to return. The AcademicAppeals Board will only consider the petition for reinstatement ofstudents who have remained outside of the university for at leastone regular (Fall or Spring) semester after their dismissal. Studentswho are disqualified, reinstated, and become disqualified asecond time will not be granted a second reinstatement.(SP04-37)Add Policy1. Students may add courses during the first three weeks ofclasses with approval signatures from the instructor.2. During the fourth week of instruction a student may add aclass with the approval of the instructor and the approvalof the Vice President for Academic Affairs (or designee) asindicated by their signatures on the appropriate forms.(SP03-05)Cancellation of Registration orWithdrawal from the InstitutionStudents who find it necessary to cancel their registration orto withdraw from all classes after enrolling for any academicterm are required to follow the University’s official withdrawalprocedures. Failure to follow formal University procedures mayresult in an obligation to pay fees as well as the assignmentof failing grades in all courses and the need to apply forreadmission before being permitted to enroll in anotheracademic term. Information on canceling registration andwithdrawal procedures is available from Records & Registration,(805) 437-8500.Students who receive financial aid funds must consult with theFinancial Aid office prior to withdrawing from the Universityregarding any required return or repayment of grant or loanassistance received for that academic term or payment period.If a recipient of student financial aid funds withdraws from theinstitution during an academic term or a payment period, theamount of grant or loan assistance received may be subject toreturn and/or repayment provisions.For more information see Withdrawal from Courses policy andsection entitled Schedule of Fees for refund information.Catalog RightsUndergraduate students remaining in attendance in regularsessions at a California State University campus, a Californiacommunity college, or any combination of these institutions, mayfor the purposes of meeting all graduation requirements elect tomeet the requirements in effect at CI either: (1) at the time thestudent began attendance, or (2) at the time of entrance to CI, or(3) at the time of graduation from CI.If while enrolled the student declares or changes the major, amajor option, or a minor, the student shall follow the requirementseither in effect at the time of the declaration or change, or ineffect at the time of graduation. Other <strong>catalog</strong> years may beapproved by department petition. Students do not lose <strong>catalog</strong>rights for GE and other graduation requirements by declaring orchanging their major, if they maintain continuous attendance.(SP08-07)Changing Basis for GradingIf either traditional letter grading or credit/no credit grading isallowed for a course, a student may change the basis of hisor her grading for the course from traditional letter grading tocredit/no credit grading, or vice versa, through the third weekof instruction without instructor approval by filing the appropriateform.
