2011 – 2012Course DescriptionsPSY 202 BIOSTATISTICS (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: A passing score on the EntryLevel Mathematics Exam (ELM) or MATH105 or EquivalentCritical reasoning using a quantitativeand statistical problem-solving approachto solve real-world problems. Usesprobability and statistics to describeand analyze biological data collectedfrom laboratory or field experiments.Course will cover descriptions of sampledata, probability and empirical datadistributions, sampling techniques,estimation and hypothesis testing,ANOVA, and correlation and regressionanalysis. Students will use standardstatistical software to analyze real worldand simulated data.Same as MATH 202GenEd: B3PSY 210 LEARNING, COGNITIONAND DEVELOPMENT (3)Three hours lecture per weekThis course presents an overview ofthe theories of learning, cognition, andhuman development. Coursework on inferentialand descriptive statistical methods willbuild on material from PSY 202PSY 301 PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCHAND STATISTICAL METHODS II (4)Three hours lecture and two hours activityper weekPrerequisites: PSY 300 with grade C orbetterA continuation of PSY 300. Advancedresearch methodology and within theempirical framework in the behavioralsciences. Topics include how to applythe scientific method within the field ofpsychology and the social sciences,ethical guidelines and issues related to theresearch in, and practice of, psychology,how to evaluate research and popularclaims in psychology with a criticaleye, and computer applications relatedto statistics and research. Courseworkon inferential and descriptive statisticalmethods will build on material from PSY300.PSY 303 STATISTICAL APPLICATIONS INTHE SOCIAL SCIENCES (4)Four hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: A passing score on the EntryLevel Mathematics Exam (ELM) or MATH105 or EquivalentIntroduces quantitative methods as used insocial & behavioral science research withthe goal of statistical literacy. Statisticaltechniques and data analysis uniqueto the behavioral and social sciences.Descriptive and inferential statistics totest hypotheses. Principles of samplingdesign, hypothesis testing for behavioraland social science research, datacollection techniques, statistical analysisand interpretation of data, as well aswritten reporting of results.
