2011 – 2012General Education RequirementsGENERAL EDUCATIONREQUIREMENTSObjectivesThe General Education Program provides a vital element infulfilling the mission of the University. Interdisciplinary coursesfacilitate learning within and across disciplines, enablingstudents to use information and approaches from a wide varietyof disciplines. Language and multicultural courses provide theopportunity for students to experience cultures other than theirown in meaningful and respectful ways. General Educationrequirements are designed to assure that all graduates of theUniversity, whatever their major, have acquired essential skills,experiences, and a broad range of knowledge appropriate toeducated people within society.General Education courses are intended:• To foster an ability to think clearly and logically;• To prepare students to find and critically examineinformation;• To communicate at an appropriate level in both oral andwritten forms;• To acquaint students with the physical universe and its lifeforms and to impart an understanding of scientificmethodology and of mathematical concepts andquantitative reasoning;• To cultivate through the study of philosophy, literature,languages, and the arts-intellect, imagination, sensibility,and sensitivity;• To deal with human social, political, and economicinstitutions and their historical backgrounds, with humanbehavior and the principles of social interaction; and• To integrate their knowledge by forming an interdisciplinaryand insightful approach to learning.RequirementsAs a graduation requirement, all <strong>CSU</strong> <strong>Channel</strong> <strong>Islands</strong>(CI) students must complete 48 units of General Educationdistributed across categories A-E. Nine of the 48 units ofGeneral Education are required to be resident upper division,interdisciplinary courses numbered in the 330-349 or 430-449ranges.Transfer students who enter CI as GE certified will need tocomplete 9 units of upper division, interdisciplinary generaleducation coursework to meet the 48 unit requirement.In planning to fulfill the General Education requirements, studentsare encouraged to consult an academic advisor and theGeneral Education Informational Brochure.Category A:Category B:Category C:Category D:Category E:Communication in the English Languageand Critical Thinking . . . . . . . 9 unitsMathematics, Sciences, andTechnology. . . . . . . . . . . 12 unitsArt, Literature, Languages andCultures . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 unitsSocial Perspectives . . . . . . . .12 unitsHuman Psychological and PhysiologicalPerspectives . . . . . . . . . . . 3 unitsUpper Division InterdisciplinaryGeneral Education CoursesNine of the 48 units of General Education have beendesignated as upper division, interdisciplinary courses.These courses integrate significant content, ideas, and waysof knowing from more than one discipline. Each of thesecourses will involve the student in collaborative work, criticalthinking, and integration of ideas. By taking nine units of thesecourses in categories A-E, students will extend their experienceacross the curriculum and gain more breadth of educationalexperience. In addition, they will begin to make connectionsbetween their majors and a variety of other fields and ways ofknowing, increasing both their knowledge and their ability tocommunicate with people across the disciplinary spectrum.• The 9 units of resident upper division General Educationrequired of all students must be selected from the listing ofupper division interdisciplinary courses. Courses may becross-listed in two or more disciplines. A minimum of threesemester units must come from a discipline outside thestudent’s major and not cross-listed with the student’s majordiscipline.• All upper division, interdisciplinary courses will includesubstantive written work consisting of in-class writing as wellas outside-class writing of revised prose.• Courses numbered 330-349 do not have prerequisites.• Courses numbered 430-449 may have prerequisites.• Students must have junior standing or permission from theinstructor to enroll in these courses.Major Specific CoursesSome majors require specific GE courses. Students shouldconsult the <strong>catalog</strong> for their majors’ requirements or contact theiradvisors.Cross Listed CoursesMany upper division General Education courses are cross-listed.Students may only receive credit once for each cross-listedcourse. For example: ENGL 431 is cross-listed with ART 431.The student may choose to receive course units for either of thetwo courses but not both.Double CountingA course may meet the content requirements for two or moreprogram areas (majors, minors, and other sub-programs) withpermission of the program; however, the units for the courseare counted only once toward the total units for graduation.Double counting between a program and General Educationrequirements is allowed; however, only 6 of the 9 units of upperdivision, interdisciplinary General Education courses may bedouble counted between a major and General Education.Courses in More Than One CategoryA course may be found in more than one GE category.
