Primaryemphases include the state standards,instructional techniques, and curricularmaterials commonly used to promoteacademic achievement in California’smulticultural social studies classrooms.Methods to reach and teach Englishlanguage learners and students withspecial needs are also highlighted.EDSS 540 LITERACY IN SECONDARYSCHOOLS (3)Three hours lecture/discussion per weekPrerequisite: Admission to the SingleSubject Credential ProgramCorequisites: EDSS 570 1-2 units orEDSS 575Secondary students will learn methodsand techniques for reading, writing,language and literacy across thesecondary curriculum including studentswith varied language backgrounds.Emphasis on how language and literacyissues and processes are crucial tosuccessful student learning and successfulteaching across contexts and contentareas. This course addresses thespecial needs of proficient readers andadolescents who struggle as readers.Includes approaches and methods thatare consistent with a comprehensive,systematic program, and are alignedwith the state adopted academic contentstandards for students in English languagearts and the reading/language artsframework.
