The AcademicAppeals Board will only consider the petition for reinstatementof students who have remained outside of the university for atleast one regular (Fall or Spring) semester after their dismissal.Students who are disqualified, reinstated, and becomedisqualified a second time will not be granted a secondreinstatement.Residence Required for the Master’s DegreeA minimum of 21 semester units must be taken in residenceafter admission to the graduate program offering the degree.The program may authorize the substitution of credit earned byalternate means for a part of this residence requirement.Withdrawal from Courses1. Students may drop courses during the first three weeks ofclasses without instructor permission.2. After the third week of classes and before the end ofthe tenth week of classes, withdrawal from courses ispermissible only for serious and compelling reasons.Approval signatures from the instructor and programchairs must be obtained to withdraw during this period.The withdrawal will be noted as a “W” on the student’spermanent record.3. After the tenth week of instruction, withdrawal is notpermitted except in cases beyond the student’s control suchas accident or serious illness where the assignment of anIncomplete is not practical. Approval signatures from theinstructor, program chair and Vice President for AcademicAffairs (or designee) must be obtained. Withdrawal in thiscategory will typically involve total withdrawal from theUniversity and will be noted as a “W” on the student’spermanent record.4. Instructor Initiated Withdrawal: Instructors may drop studentswithin the first three weeks of classes and as early as thefirst day of classes for any of the following reasons:a. Student failure to attend class without having made priorarrangements with the instructor.b. Student failure to complete the prerequisites for a coursebefore enrolling.c. Graduation is not automatic upon thecompletion of requirements. Students who intend to graduatemust take the initiative and should follow the key steps listedbelow. While students are ultimately responsible for completingall degree requirements, assistance is available through facultyadvisement, the Advising Center and Graduation Evaluations. Itis important that students meet regularly with an advisor to avoidgraduation problems and delays.Eligibility for a Master’s Degreein EducationTo be eligible for the Master’s Degree, the candidate shall havecompleted the following minimum requirements:1. Requirements for the Degreea. The completion of a specified course of study approvedby the Curriculum Committee at CI and/or CCTCb. A minimum of thirty semester units of approved graduatework. (SP05-28)c. Completion of graduate work in no more than 7 years.(SP05-23)d. At least 21 semester units must be completed inresidence as indicated in the University Catalog.e. Seventy percent of the degree must be at 500 and 600level. When undergraduate 400-level courses aretaken, extra work must be completed. (SP05-24)f. No more than six semester units shall be allowed for athesis, project, or comprehensive exam preparation.(SP05-25)2. Advancement to candidacy. A candidate who has beengranted classified standing will be advanced to candidacyafter a request is filed for graduation by the student andan affirmative recommendation is made by the graduateadvisor. An overall minimum grade point average is 3.0(B) and a minimum grade point average of 3.0 for allstudy plan course work is required.
