Theexamination of cultural and conceptualcontexts will trace the early developmentof Western artistic traditions.GenEd: C1ART 111 RENAISSANCE TOMODERN ART (3)Three hours lecture per weekSurvey of the history of art andarchitecture from the EuropeanRenaissance through Modern Art. Culturaland conceptual contexts will examine theevolution of the art object as a form ofWestern cultural expression.GenEd: C1ART 112 ART OF THEEASTERN WORLD (3)Three hours lecture per weekExploration of painting, architectureand crafts of India, China, Japan andSoutheast Asia. An examination of artistic,cultural, and historical events explores theexchange of influences and ideas relatedto Eastern cultures.GenEd: C1, C3BART 200 ART HISTORY: TOOLSAND METHODS (3)Three hours lecture per weekAn introduction to research,methodologies, analyses and writingsspecific to the discipline of art history.Utilizes case study analyses selected froma variety of cultures and art periods, andaddresses multiple resources available forresearching and interpreting art historicalmaterial.ART 201 PAINTING (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisites: ART 105, ART 106 andART 107An introduction to basic paintingmaterials and techniques. Experimentsin representational and abstract paintingwill explore oil, acrylic, and water-basedmedia. Particular emphasis will be on thedevelopment of fundamental skills and theunderstanding of color, shape, surfaceand pictorial structure.ART 202 SCULPTURE (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisites: ART 105, ART 106 andART 107An introduction to basic sculpturematerials and techniques. Experiments inrepresentational and abstract sculpturewill explore a variety of three-dimensionalmaterials through additive andsubtractive sculptural processes. Particularemphasis will be on the development offundamental skills and the understandingof design, form and structural elements.ART 203 ILLUSTRATION (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisites: ART 105, ART 106, andART 107An introduction to basic materialsand rendering techniques utilized incommercial illustration including a varietyof media and styles exploring quash,colored pencils, pen and ink, pastels andmarkers. Emphasis is on the developmentof fundamental skills and conceptsrequired to execute successful illustrations.ART 204 GRAPHIC DESIGN (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisites: ART 105 or ART 106 or ART108 or Consent of instructorAn introduction to basic concepts ingraphic design for print and electronicmedia. Projects incorporating traditionaland digital media explore typography,layout and visual design. Particularemphasis is on the development offundamental skills leading to the ability tocommunicate ideas through the use of textand visual imagery.ART 205 MULTIMEDIA (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisites: ART 105 or ART 106 orART107 or COMP 105 or Consent ofinstructorAn introduction to techniques andconcepts involved in the production ofinteractive multimedia. Projects explorebasic interactive technologies utilized inthe creation of digital graphics, websitesand computer game designs.ART 206 ANIMATION (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisites: ART 105 or ART 106 orART 107 or ART 108 or COMP 105 orConsent of InstructorAn introduction to basic techniques andprocesses involved in the productionof animation. Projects include elementsof concept and story development,character design, story boarding, timing,key framing, inbetweening, and cellproduction leading to the creation of shortworks in animation.ART 207 CERAMICS (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisites: ART 105 and ART 106Explorations into a wide variety ofceramic ideas, techniques and materialsutilized in the development of handbuildingmethods as applied to sculpturaland vessel forms. Basic competence withthe potter’s wheel will also be covered.Lab fee required.ART 208 THE PHYSICS OF ART ANDVISUAL PERCEPTION (3)Two hours lecture and two hours activityper weekA course on the physics of light, color,art and visual perception. The coursewill cover the nature of light and opticalphenomena, the perception andpsychology of color, the reproduction ofcolor in different media, and the analysisof art from a science perspective. Theemphasis is on factors which permitthe artist and observer to understandand more fully control the design andinterpretation of images of all kinds.Demonstrations, experiments, andvideo/computer simulations are used toanalyze signals received by the eyes orinstruments.Same as PHYS 208GenEd: B1, C1ART 209 PHOTOGRAPHY (3)Six hours activity per weekPrerequisite: ART 108Fundamental techniques and theories ofphotographic media are explored throughstudio experiments into various genres ofphotography including documentary, fineart and commercial applications.
