From its rootsin Africa and later in New Orleans, jazzwill be studied as both a musical and asocial phenomenon that originated andwas nurtured in the African-Americancommunity. The course will explore issuesof community, ethnicity, class, and genderin relationship to jazz as a vehicle forboth personal and cultural expression.Through recordings, videos, lectures,demonstrations and live performances,students will study jazz and its forerunners,ragtime and blues, from their beginningsto the present day.GenEd: C1, C3B, InterdisciplinaryPAMU 332 WORLD MUSIC (3)Three hours lecture per weekSurveys folk music styles from around theworld including Latin American, European,Asian and African. A broad range of musicalstyles will be studied, including, but notlimited to, European, Asian, and MiddleEastern classical music; American jazzand popular music; and folk musicof western and non-western cultures.Students will study the unifying andauthenticating nature of music withingroups of people, as well as study theexperience of music on a personal level.GenEd: C1, InterdisciplinaryPAMU 335 THE PHYSICS OF MUSIC (3)Two hours lecture and two hours activityper weekProvides an understanding of musicand sound for students interested inmusic, speech, and language. Examinesthe societal forces that helped to shapeclassical and popular musical styles,and how music can and has influencedculture. Music in history is contextualizedwithin multicultural perspectives.
