It explores different types oflanguage variations, including historicalchange (language evolution from Latin toSpanish), geographical variation (differentdialects in the Spanish-speaking world),and sociolinguistic variation (based oneconomic class, age, gender, etc.). Italso analyzes fundamental issues inbilingualism (such as Spanish-Englishcodeswitching) and other sociopoliticaltopics relating to the use of Spanish in theUnited States.SPAN 420 SPECIALIZED SPANISHTRANSLATION (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: SPAN 320 or Consent ofinstructorPractice and critique of translationsof a range of specialized material(legal, literary, business, social science,technical, and audiovisual) both fromSpanish to English and from English toSpanish. Review of translation theory,methods, techniques, and problems.SPAN 421 SPANISH FOR EDUCATORS I (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: SPAN 301 or SPAN 302 orConsent of instructorPrepares students to function effectively inSpanish within a school setting. Emphasisis placed on developing the Spanishfluency and vocabulary necessary forclassroom and school-related communitysituations. Course content emphasizesthe K-6 school setting. The topics include:General school-related vocabulary,parent-teacher conferences, writing letters,language arts and reading vocabulary,examples of Spanish-language children’sliterature, social studies and mathematics.This course does not count toward theSpanish Major.SPAN 422 SPANISH FOR EDUCATORS II (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: SPAN 301 or SPAN 302 orConsent of instructorPrepares students to function effectively inSpanish within a school setting. Emphasisis placed on developing the Spanishfluency and vocabulary necessary forclassroom and school-related communitysituations. Course content emphasizesthe K-6 school setting. The topics include:1) General science vocabulary (parts ofthe body, illnesses, foods and nutrition,animals, plants, minerals, weather, solarsystem), 2) General art vocabulary andbrief introduction to several Hispanicartists and their work, 3) General musicvocabulary and brief introductionto several Spanish-language songs,including children’s songs. This Coursedoes not count toward the Spanish major.SPAN 429 SOCIAL CHANGE IN SPAIN (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: SPAN 202 or SPAN 212 orwith Consent of instructorTaught in Spanish. Addresses two aspectsof Spanish culture, the tremendous socialchange during the period known as thetransition from the dictatorship of Francoto a modern democratic state, as wellas how social change is expressed in avariety of social institutions.Same as SOC 429SPAN 450 INTRODUCTION TO LITERARYTRANSLATION (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: SPAN 310 and SPAN 320,or Consent of instructorAn introduction to the theory and practiceof literary translation from Spanish toEnglish and vice-versa.
