2011 – 2012Course DescriptionsEducationEDUC 101 INTRODUCTION TOELEMENTARY SCHOOLING (3)Two hours lecture and two hours activityper weekThis service learning course providesstructured observation and tutoringexperiences which reflect a rich arrayof student diversity in local schools.Emphasis is placed on gaining awarenessof connections between disciplineknowledge and teaching and learning.This course will help students decideif a career in the elementary teachingprofession is the right choice for them.Thirty hours of field experience inelementary schools is required.GenEd: DEDUC 320 EDUCATION INMODERN SOCIETY (3)Three hours lecture per weekSurvey of educational institutions andpractices used in different sectorsof society. Includes historical andphilosophical foundations of Americaneducation.GenEd: DEDUC 330 INTRODUCTION TOSECONDARY SCHOOLING (3)Two hours lecture/discussion and twohours field observations per weekCorequisite: English majors must beconcurrently enrolled in at least one upperdivision English class; other majors arerecommended to be concurrently enrolledin a core course in their majorThrough this course students areintroduced to secondary school conceptsand issues. Topics include middle schooland high school organization andstructures, the roles of school personnel,and teaching in specific content areas.Students will be placed in local middleand high schools classrooms in theircontent major and have seminarswith university educators and contentspecialists to discuss subject mattercoverage and teaching at various gradelevels. It is recommended that students beconcurrently enrolled in a core contentcourse in their major. Field experience insecondary schools required.GenEd: D, InterdisciplinaryEDUC 342 THE ZOO: CONSERVATION,EDUCATION ANDRECREATION (3)Three hours lecture per weekAn interdisciplinary study of zoos andzoological gardens from scientific,managerial, business, recreational andeducational perspectives. Analyzes howthese perspectives are linked within zoopractices. The course will include anin-depth case study of a local zoo. Fieldtrips to local zoos will be required.Same as BIOL 342, BUS 342,ECON 342GenEd: D, InterdisciplinaryEDUC 343 TEACHING DRAMA TOCHILDREN (3)Three hours lecture per weekStudents will participate in theatre games,improvisations, and other tasks that willprepare them to design and implementdramatic activities as a learning tool.Theatre in a broader context will also beexamined.Same as PATH 343GenEd: C1, InterdisciplinaryEDUC 344 THE LIBRARY: COLLECTIONS,SERVICES & INSTRUCTION (3)Three hours lecture per weekA study of university, school (K-12),public, and special libraries frombusiness, economic, library science, andeducational perspectives. Analyzes howthese perspectives are linked within librarypractices. A study of local libraries andfield trips.Same as BUS 344, ECON 344, LIB 344GenEd: D, InterdisciplinaryEDUC 345 MEDIA LITERACY ANDYOUTH CULTURE (3)Three hours lecture per weekThis interdisciplinary course examinesthe relationship between masscommunication, mass media, and youthculture. Topics include the theoriesand effects of mass communication, inparticular the effects of mass media onchildren and adolescents. To developmedia literacy, students will apply theseconcepts to their own experiences withpopular media, including television, print,and film.Same as COMM 345GenEd: A1, D, InterdisciplinaryEDUC 346 SCHOOL COMMUNICATION (3)Three hours lecture per weekExamines written, verbal and nonverbalcommunication in school settings betweenteachers and stakeholders. Emphasizesthe importance of communication andsuccessful personal interactions.Same as COMM 346GenEd: A1, InterdisciplinaryEDUC 347 THE UNIVERSITY (3)Three hours lecture per weekA study of institutions of higher educationfrom multiple perspectives including, butnot limited to education, teaching andlearning, scholarly and creative activities,community service, management, andpublic policy. Includes case studies ofcolleges and universities in the region andmay include field trips to these institutions.Same as BUS 347, ECON 347GenEd: D, InterdisciplinaryEDUC 404 POLICY LEADERSHIP (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisite: POLS 150Explores policy leadership across alllevels of society and across educationaland political domains. Exposes studentsto ideas about policy leadership,requiring students to learn about currentleaders in the region, the U.S. andabroad as theories and concepts areapplied to the real world of politics andpolicy.Same as POLS 404EDUC 431 EDUCATION POLICYAND POLITICS (3)Three hours lecture per weekPrerequisites: POLS 150 for POLS studentsor Consent of instructorExamines the roles of political institutionsin education policy making, the politicalfactors that shape policy formulationand implementation, the values andassumptions of different types of policies,and the links between policy and locallevelimplementation. Analyzes currentand pending policies’ effect on schoolsand classrooms to illustrate how educationpolicy reflects American politics.Same as POLS 431GenEd: D, InterdisciplinaryEDUC 434 THE MUSEUM: CULTURE,BUSINESS AND EDUCATION (3)Three hours lecture per weekAmerica is a country of many cultures,and each of these has brought legaciesof its roots to the American stage. In thiscourse we will read plays written byNative Americans, Hispanic Americans,Asian Americans, African Americansand others. This course is regional inorganization rather than chronological,and is organized around one or morethemes.
