during which privileges of continuing in student statusare conditioned upon future behavior. Conditions mayinclude, for example, the potential loss of specifiedprivileges to which a current student would otherwisebe entitled, or the probability of more severe disciplinarysanctions if the student is found to violate any universityrule during the probationary period.f. Suspension -– Separation of the student from <strong>CSU</strong>student status for a certain period of time, after which thestudent is eligible to reapply to the university. Conditionsfor readmission may be specified.g. Expulsion -– Permanent separation of the student from<strong>CSU</strong> student status from the California State Universitysystem.h. Admission or Readmission -– Admission orreadmission to the California State University may bequalified, revoked or denied to any person found tohave violated the Student Conduct Code.In addition to the sanctions referenced under Article V of ExecutiveOrder 1043 and in this policy under the section titled Sanctions,<strong>CSU</strong> <strong>Channel</strong> <strong>Islands</strong> may impose the following University-recognizedsanctions:a. Oral Disciplinary Warning – An oral disciplinarywarning is an official warning that the student’s behavioris in violation of the CI Student Code of Conduct. Theoral warning is the least severe of all the sanctions andwill be documented in the student’s disciplinary file. Ifthe student is found to be in violation of a secondcharge, subsequent action may be more severe.b. Written Disciplinary Warning -– A written disciplinarywarning is an official reprimand for violations ofspecified University policies or campus regulations. Thewritten warning is placed in the students’ file for aspecified period of time. The warning is then removed ifthe student does not commit any further violations duringthe specified time. If the student is found to be inviolation of a second charge, subsequent action may bemore severe.c. Multiple Sanctions -– More than one sanction may beimposed for a single violation.d. Good Standing -– A student is not considered to be ingood standing for purposes of admission to theCalifornia State University while under a sanction ofsuspension, or expulsion, or while his or her admissionor re-admission has been qualified (Section 40601 (g)of Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations).e. Administrative Hold and Withholding aDegree -– The university may place an administrativehold on registration transactions and release of recordsand transcripts of a student who has been sent a Noticeof Hearing and may withhold awarding a degreeotherwise earned until the completion of the process setforth in the Student Conduct Code, including thecompletion of all sanctions imposed.f. Record of Discipline -– Disciplinary probation isentered on a student’s transcript, with beginning andend date, for the period of time that the probation isin effect. Suspension is entered on the student’stranscript, with beginning and end date, for the periodof time that the suspension is in effect, but remains onthe transcript permanently if the suspension is for longerthan one academic year. Expulsion is entered on thestudent’s transcript permanently along with the date ittakes effect.Interim Suspension1. GroundsThe VPSA (as the president’s designee) may imposean interim suspension where there is reasonable causeto believe that separation of a student is necessary toprotect the personal safety of persons within the universitycommunity, property of the university or to ensure themaintenance of order (Section 41302 of Title 5 of theCalifornia Code of Regulations).2. Notice and Opportunity for HearingA student placed on interim suspension is given promptnotice of the charges pending against him or her asenumerated in Section 41301 of Title 5 of the CaliforniaCode of Regulations and a factual description of the conductalleged to form their basis. The opportunity for a hearingwithin ten working days of the imposition of the suspensionis also required. (Section 41302 of Title 5 of the CaliforniaCode of Regulations). Where a timely request is made,a hearing will be held to determine whether continuedsuspension is required to protect personal safety or propertyor to ensure the maintenance of order. This hearing mayalso serve as the disciplinary hearing in accordance withthe procedures outlined in Article IV, provided that propernotice has been given. The hearing is conducted pursuantto the provisions of Article IV, Section 4 of these procedures.If the university proves that there is reasonable cause forthe interim suspension to continue it shall remain in effectuntil the university closes the disciplinary matter, whetherby settlement, final decision or dropped charges, but inno case longer than the VPSA (as the president’s designee)has determined is required to protect the personal safetyof persons within the university community, property of theuniversity or to ensure the maintenance of order.3. Denial of Presence on CampusDuring the period of an interim suspension, the studentcharged may not, without prior written permission from his/her campus VPSA (as the president’s designee), enter anycampus of the California State University other than to attendthe hearing regarding the merits of his/her suspension.Violation of any condition of interim suspension shall begrounds for expulsion (Section 41302 of Title 5 of theCalifornia Code of Regulations).Conduct by Applicants for AdmissionAdmission or readmission may be qualified, revoked or deniedto any person who commits acts that would be the basisfor disciplinary proceedings pursuant to these procedures.Qualified admission or denial of admission in such case shallbe determined by a hearing held pursuant to Article IV of theseprocedures.(SA.11.003)Student ConductStudent ConductTitle 5, California Code of Regulations, §41301.
