Woollen garments werefrom the firstregarded as typical of the primitive simplicityaffected by the early Muslims : of 'Umar, the second Caliph,Mas'udi tells us 1 that "he used to wear a jubba of wool (s&f)patched with pieces of leather and the like," while Salmon thePersian is described by the same historian 2 as " wearing woollenraiment," and the same fact is recorded 3 of Abu 'Ubayda b.al-Jarrah. Later, when luxury became prevalent, those whoadhered to the old simple ways of the Prophet's immediatesuccessors, silently protesting against the growing worldlinessand extravagance of their contemporaries, were termed"Sufis," and, in this earliest form, alike in respect to theirsimple attire, their protest against ostentation and extravagance,their piety and quietism, they present a remarkableanalogy with the early Quakers. There isalways in extremequietism, and that spirituality which is impatient of mereformal worship and lip-service, a tendency towards Pantheism ;but in these earlySufis this istendency much less noticeablethan, for instance, in Eckhart, Tauler, and the fourteenthcenturyGerman mystics ; though later, under the influence ofNeo-Platonist ideas, it became very conspicuous.
