Before approaching it, however,something more remains to be said of the older Persianliterature and its discovery, and sundry other matters germanethereto, which will be discussed in the next chapter.
CHAPTER IITHE DISCOVERY AND INTERPRETATION OF THE INSCRIPTIONSAND DOCUMENTS OF ANCIENT PERSIA, WITH OTHERPHILOLOGICAL MATTER.THE language of Modern, that is to sayof Post-Muhammadan,Persia, was naturally, for practical reasons, an objectinterest and study in Europe long before any^development serious attempt was made to solve the enigmasstudfesuTEurope presented by the three ancient languages of whichthis chapter will briefly trace the discovery anddecipherment : to wit,inscriptions, the Avestic idiom,ofthe Old Persian of the Achaemenianand the Pahlawi of Sasaniantimes. The study of Modern Persian, again, was precededby that of Arabic j which, as the vehicle whereby thePhilosophy of the Greeks, especiallyof Aristotle, firstbecame clearlyknown to Western Europe, commandedin a far higher degree the attention and interest of menof learning.
