—6 COLLECTIONS FR03I IIELANESIA.Subbrachycephalic, prognathous, just above leptorb<strong>in</strong>e.Glabella prom<strong>in</strong>ent, about No. 3 of Broca's scale. Ini<strong>on</strong> scarcelydeveloped.This skull is unusually broad for a Melanesian, and has a somewhatlow nasal <strong>in</strong>dex ; it agrees, however, very well with No. 1193of Prof. Plower's Catalogue * (" The cranium of a Papuan, from <strong>on</strong>eof <strong>the</strong> islands <strong>in</strong> Torres Strait, c? "), and its extreme prognathismshows that it undoubtedly bel<strong>on</strong>gs to <strong>the</strong> Melanesian race. It hasunderg<strong>on</strong>e c<strong>on</strong>siderable occipital flatten<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> left side, ei<strong>the</strong>rfrom sleep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>on</strong> a hard wooden pillow or some similar cause ; andthis has no doubt caused <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong>-case to be abnormally broad.The present specimen is said to be <strong>the</strong> skull of <strong>the</strong> last chief of<strong>the</strong> island of Nagheer, and is ornamented with two l<strong>on</strong>g str<strong>in</strong>gs ofglass beads and tassels of red calico hang<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> zj'gomata. Ithas its orbits filled with red clay, <strong>on</strong> which are fastened obl<strong>on</strong>g bitsof mo<strong>the</strong>r-of-pearl for eyes ;<strong>the</strong>re is an artificial nose carved <strong>in</strong>wood and pa<strong>in</strong>ted red, and a red band of pa<strong>in</strong>t passes across <strong>the</strong>forehead. The right upper can<strong>in</strong>e, lost after death but befoi'e <strong>the</strong>preparati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> skull, has been replaced by a wooden tooth. Thefour posterior teeth <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> right lower jaw have all been lost dur<strong>in</strong>glife, and <strong>the</strong>ir alveoli have quite closed up.2.
