MIEES.The collection of Crustacea made in the Indian Ocean, if lessnumerous in species and less interesting than those obtained on theAustralian coasts, contains a larger number of rare or uudescribedforms than might have been expected, when it is remembered thatthe localities are all included in a region whose Crustacean faunahas been repeatedly explored by the collector. Of the Islands,however, visited by Dr. Coppinger, the Amirante, Providence, andGlorioso groups have been hitherto terrcB inco(/nitce to the carcinologist,and but little has been hitherto reorded of the Crustaceanfauna of the Seychelles.It may be useful (as in the previous part of this <strong>Report</strong>) to mentionhere the principal memoirs which have appeared since thepublication of Mihie-Edwards's Histoire naturelle des Crustaces'(1834-40) which deal specially with the Crustacean fauna of theEast-African coast from the lied Sea to the Cape of Good Hope, andof the Mascarene Islands and other islands belonging to the samegeographical subrcgion.In 1843 appeared Dr. F. Krauss's valuable account of the South-African Crustacea*, containing a complete enumeration of the thenknown Podophthalmia and Edriophthalmia of the Cape Colony andKatal, a work which even now forms the standard of reference forall students of the South-African Crustacea. Since its publicationfew additions have, indeed, been made to our knowledge of theSouth-African marine and littoral Crustacea beyond the descriptionsof certain new species by Dr. W. Stimpsonf.In 1861-62 appeared Dr. C. Heller's standard work, " Beitriige zurCrnstaceen-Fauna des rothen Meeres"'+, which added largely to whatw as previously known from the writings of Milne-Edwards, Eiippell,* 'Die siidafrikanischen Crustacecn,' S^tuttgart (1843), 4to.t Proc.
