After a careful examination of the so-called specieswhich I have united above, I cannot detect any constant differences.The above variety I believe to be founded on non-adult shells fortwo reasons :—first, I find only six whorls, exclusive of the smoothapical ones, being one less than in the typical suturalis ; and,secondly, the aperture is larger, a result due to the less degree ofthickening of the labrum and columella. It is true that the sutureis less excavated, but this concavity is variable in specimens undoubtedlynormal. The number of costte is also inconstant, varyingfrom nine to twelve on a whorl ; in the former case, as might be expected,being thicker than in the latter. The tuberculation andliration on the columella depend for the amount of their develojimentupon age, adult shells having a larger quantity and a greater expansionof the free columellar caQosity than young specimens, but thelirae within the outer lip, wlien countable, are generally about nineiu number,32.
