Soc. 1853, p. 70 ; Sowerby,Thesaurus, vol. iv. pi. 400. fig. 200 (enlarged).Darros Island, Amirantes, in 22 fms., on a broken-coral bottom ;China Sea (Adams).This charming little species consists of seven whorls, three apicalsmooth and convex, and four normal. It is of a pink or almostscarlet colour, has six rounded costie on the body-whorl and sevenon the upper volutions ; these are crossed by scabrous spiral ridges,of which there are two to three principal ones on the upper whorls,more slender ones intervening between them and the suture, andabout seven on the last. The entire surface is beautifully ornamentedby raised lines of growth, so that the transverse ridges arevery prettily squamose. The aperture is small, ovate, and contractedanteriorly into a narrow but not closed canal. The labrum is wellthickened exteriorly by the last varix, crenulated at the thin margin,and finely Urate within. Sowerby mentions an orange-colouredvariety of this species : but this is unknown to me. His figure isvery coarsely executed, magnified to more than twice the actuallength of the shell, and shows only four costa? on the whorls, whilstfive are always visible frona any point of view.20. Whorls 7, three apical smooth, convex ;thorest obliquely sloping ebove, the slightest concave, then sharplyangled, straight below the angle and sloping inwards a little tothe suture beneath ; they are strcnglhencd with moderately stronglongitudinal costa;, crossed by stout spiral ridges and finer lira?.
