492 COLLECTIONS FEOM THE WESTEEN INDIAN OCEAN.The costa3 are seven in number on the last volution, and eight ornine on the upper ones. There are two principal transverse ridgeson the latter, with a smaller one between them, the uppermostbeing situated at the angle about the middle of the whorls, and thelowermost at the suture below. The body-whorl has three stoutridges round the middle part, and two rather more slender onesbelow, in addition to the raised squamous ridge around the cauda orextremity. On crossing the costae these ridges are considerablyproduced into prickly hollow scales, and are everywhere crossed byvery fine elevated lines of growth. The aperture is lilac, not greatlycontracted anteriorly, and, together with the canal, occupies abouthalf the entire length of the shell. The outer lip is armed withinwith about six short lirje ; and the columella exhibits a tiibercleat the upper part and one or two below the middle. The canal isshort, open, and recurved. F.)Shell small, fusiformly ovate, white, spotted upon and between theribs with pale and dark brown. Whorls 7, the apical smooth,convex ; the rest subconcavely sloping above, angulated near themiddle, straightish at the sides, longitudinally costate and spirallyridged. Costa) moderately strong, about nine on a whorl, producedinto angular prominences where crossed by the chief transverselirte ; the latter are three in number on the upper volutions, allon their lower half, and five or six on the last. In addition tothese, the surface is ornamented with several finer intervening lira?and very fine lines of growth. The aperture is rather open, ovate,contracted into a short, open, oblique, recurved canal, and somewhatstained with yellow. The labrum has a broad varix exteriorly, andabout eight fine lirse within. The columella is arcuate above,yellowish, and bears a small tubercle or two below the middle.Length 11 millim., greatest width 6.Darros Island, Amirantes, 22 fms. ; broken-coral bottom.This species closely resembles M. tiitens, A.
