significant in Southeast Asia. In this respect, more traincd manpower an(<br />

laboratories to facilitate analysis <strong>and</strong> monitoring of pesticide residues an<br />

urgently needed. Countries within the Region sl;ou!d closely cooperate in thP<br />

important issue. Thc. propcsal of a group of deve)oping countries, which met ir<br />

Thail<strong>and</strong> in 1984 for establishing a Regional <strong>Pest</strong>icide Training Center anc<br />

Service Laboratory, should be fully exploited.<br />

Public awareness of the benefits <strong>and</strong> risks of pesticides to health <strong>and</strong><br />

environment should be increased through various activities. Television, radio,<br />

mass media, <strong>and</strong> periodic gatherings are effective means for this purpose. Close<br />

collaboration among government officials <strong>and</strong> various public sector groups is<br />

essential in this respect.<br />

In the future, selective pesticides such as botanicals <strong>and</strong> insectistatics, are<br />

likely to be in higher dem<strong>and</strong> than broad-spectrum pesticides, although it is<br />

understood that the manufacture of selective pesticides is getting more <strong>and</strong> more<br />

difficult, <strong>and</strong> therefore very costly.<br />
