MESSAGE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT<br />

Posters<br />

Eight distinct mcssages were cast in posters:<br />

I. "Don't waste money for chemicals that don't work. Be sure. Know what<br />

chemicals to use <strong>and</strong> when."<br />

2. "Are you killing all the friendly insects <strong>and</strong> getting pests in your field? Get<br />

<strong>Integrated</strong> <strong>Pest</strong> <strong>Management</strong> training <strong>and</strong> be more sure you're using<br />

chemicals correctly."<br />

3. "Be more suire. If you identify dangerous pests <strong>and</strong> diseases in your field...<br />

<strong>and</strong> then you control them properly <strong>and</strong> know that they are controlled ...you<br />

can sleep easier."<br />

4. "Be more sure what friendly insects are inyour field killing pests for you."<br />

5. "Are you ignorant? You must be ignorant if you don't know how these<br />

insects can help you."<br />

6. "Be sure. lKrow the identity of rice pests. Choose the right pesticides.<br />

Don'I It pesL <strong>and</strong> diseases surprise you."<br />

7. "Do you know that there are other ways to control pests ... Besides using<br />

chemicals?"<br />

8. "The insect that you are killing now may be a useful one ... Not all insects<br />

are pests."<br />

Audio Cassette Drama<br />

As in thz posters, the audio cassette dramas focussed on this message:<br />

"Do not waste money; spray only when it's profitable. Don't spray the wrong<br />

chemicals because you've incorrectly identified the pest. Identify first, then<br />

decide whether or not to spray, then choose chemicals. Get IPC training <strong>and</strong> be<br />

more sure you're using chemicals correctly."<br />

To develop locally specific drama content, a list of questions that farmers in<br />

the campaign areas had raised <strong>and</strong> excerpts of their actual conversations on IPC<br />

were h<strong>and</strong>ed over to de scriptwriter. This enabled him to create dialogue that the<br />

intended listeners could identify with, thus enhancing the relevance <strong>and</strong><br />

attractiveness of the audio cassette dranas.<br />

FORMATIVE EVALUATION<br />

While the communication materials were deveioped by professionals, there<br />

was still a need to pretest them to check if they would achieve the desired<br />

response from their intended audience. Prototype material was shown to<br />

representatives of the intended audiences to check if the message was conveyed<br />

<strong>and</strong> if the communication material was acceptable, attractive, <strong>and</strong> relevant.
