2015, the Beijing China Health Huayang Institute of Gene<br />

Technology committed circa US$ 300 million to the Human<br />

Variome Project; the funds will be used over the next ten years<br />

to build 5 000 new gene- and disease-specific databases and<br />

to establish the Chinese node of the Human Variome Project.<br />

Two new regional centres for training and research<br />

Other opportunities for international collaboration have<br />

arisen from the establishment of two regional centres for<br />

research and training since 2011, which function under the<br />

auspices of <strong>UNESCO</strong>:<br />

n the Regional Training and Research Centre on Ocean<br />

Dynamics and Climate was launched on 9 June 2011<br />

in Qingdao City. It is hosted by the First Institute of<br />

Oceanography, part of the State Oceanic Administration,<br />

and trains young scientists from Asian developing<br />

countries, in particular, at no cost to the beneficiary;<br />

n the International Research and Training Centre for<br />

Science and Technology Strategy was inaugurated in<br />

Beijing in September 2012. It designs and conducts<br />

international co-operative research and training<br />

programmes in such areas as S&T indicators and<br />

statistical analysis, technology foresight and roadmapping,<br />

financing policies for innovation, the<br />

development of small and medium-sized enterprises,<br />

strategies for addressing climate change and sustainable<br />

development, etc.<br />
