third menstrual cycle.16' Al-Quroo' in Arabic is the plural <strong>of</strong> qar',<br />

which means menses, but it also means purification.'62<br />

Another example is his understanding <strong>of</strong> the verse $or you<br />

have been in contact with women) (Qur'an 4: 43) as referring to<br />

intercourse. He said: Al-Lamas (lit. touching) means intercourse, hut<br />

AUah (s) implied it here.'63 The people interpreted touching in the<br />

verse $And if you divorce them before you have touched them, and<br />

you have appointed unto them the mahr [bridal-money given by the<br />

husband to his wife at the time <strong>of</strong> maniagel) (Qur'an 2: 237) as<br />

referring to being alone with them. He said: What is meant by<br />

touching here is being alone with.'64 So he ruled that it is obligatory<br />

to pay the dowry in full if the husband has been alone with the<br />

wife.165 He also said: If he drew the curtain on his wife and closed the<br />

door, then the bridal gift and the 'iddah become<br />

3.5.6. Understanding the text<br />

in the light <strong>of</strong> another text<br />

An example <strong>of</strong> this is that Amir al-Mu'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> (&)<br />

understood the verse $And never will Allah grant to the disbelievers a<br />

way [to triumph] over the believers) (Qur'an 4: 141) as referring to the<br />

Day <strong>of</strong> Resurrection, because <strong>of</strong> the [preceding] words $AIM will<br />

judge between you [all] on the Day <strong>of</strong> Resurrection.) (Qur'arz 4: 141).<br />

That was when a man came to him and asked him: How do we<br />

understand this verse, dAnd never will Allah grant to the disbelievers<br />

a way (to triumph) over the believers?) (Qur'an 4: 141) '<strong>Ali</strong> (&)<br />

said: Come closer to me. Allah (B) will judge between you on the<br />

Day <strong>of</strong> Resurrection, and Allah (g) will never grant to the<br />

disbelievers a way (to triumph) over the be1ie~ers.l~~<br />

He understood the verse, $And by the ro<strong>of</strong> raised high)<br />
