2.3. The most famous judges <strong>of</strong><br />

Amir al-Mu'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> T2ib (&)<br />

Amir al-Mu'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Taib (&) retained some <strong>of</strong><br />

the judges who had demonstrated their high calibre and had been<br />

appointed to that post before his caliphate, and he appointed some<br />

other judges and governors,27 including tbe following:<br />

1. Shurayh ibn al-H2rith who was in charge <strong>of</strong> the judiciary in<br />

Kufab. '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) approved <strong>of</strong> his post and paid him five hundred<br />

dirhams every month."<br />

2. Abu Moosa d-Asb'ari, whom 'Uthm2n (&) bad appointed to<br />

the judiciary in Kufah. '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) confirmed him in this post but<br />

later dismissed him."<br />

3. 'Ubaydullah ibn Mas'ood, the governor and judge <strong>of</strong> Yemen.<br />

4. 'Uthmin ibn Hmeef in Basra.<br />

5. Qays ibn Sa'd in Egypt. He had been present at the conquest <strong>of</strong><br />

Egypt and had a house there. He governed it for '<strong>Ali</strong> (&), then<br />

he was dismissed and replaced by Muhammad ibn <strong>Abi</strong> ~akr.~'<br />

6. 'Amirah ibn Shihsb in Kufah.<br />

7. Qatham ibn al-'Abbh in Madinah in 37 AH, Makkah and at-<br />

~2if.~'<br />

8. Ja'dah ibn Hubayrah d-Makbzoomi, then Khulayd ibn Qurrah<br />

al-Yarboo'i in Khora~an.~~<br />

9. Abdullah ibu 'Abbk, who was '<strong>Ali</strong>'s governor in Basra. Abu al-<br />

Aswad ad-Duwali was in charge <strong>of</strong> its judiciary, and some<br />

interestiug verdicts were narrated from him. According to<br />

mother opinion, Abdullah ibn 'Abbss appointed 'Abdur-<br />

Ralpn211 ibn Yazeed al-Hudini to be in charge <strong>of</strong> the judiciary in
