5.7. '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) at the Battle <strong>of</strong> mud<br />

At the Battle <strong>of</strong> mud, the fighting began with a duel between<br />

'<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib (&) and Talhah ibn 'Uthmcn, who was carrying<br />

the banner <strong>of</strong> the polytheists. He asked for a duel several times, and<br />

'<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib (&) went out and said to him: "By the One in<br />

Whose hand is my soul, I will not leave you until Allah hastens yon<br />

to hell by means <strong>of</strong> my sword or He hastens me to paradise by means<br />

<strong>of</strong> your sword." '<strong>Ali</strong> stmck him and cut <strong>of</strong>f his foot, and he fell to the<br />

ground, exposing his private parts. He said: "0 son <strong>of</strong> my uncle, I<br />

adjure you by Allah and by our ties <strong>of</strong> kinship." He retreated from<br />

him and did not Wsh him <strong>of</strong>f. The Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah said: "Allihu<br />

akbar" and some <strong>of</strong> his companions said to '<strong>Ali</strong>: "Why didn't you<br />

finish him <strong>of</strong>f?" He said: "He is my cousin and he adjured me by the<br />

ties <strong>of</strong> kinship when his private parts became uncovered, and I felt<br />

embarrassed before him."391 After battle was joined, '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) took<br />

the banner following the slaying <strong>of</strong> Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr (A).<br />

During the battle, '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) killed many <strong>of</strong> the polytheists<br />

despite the hardships that befell the Muslims in this battle, in addition<br />

to his striving to defend the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (B).~~''<strong>Ali</strong>( +) 4.<br />

was the one who took the hand <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) when<br />

be fell into a hole on the day <strong>of</strong> Q U ~ . During ~ ~ this ~ battle, a large<br />

number <strong>of</strong> the best <strong>of</strong> the Muhcjireen and An& were martyred, and it<br />

left deep sorrow in the heart <strong>of</strong> the Messenger (g). The enemy<br />

managed to ham the noble Messenger, causing his face to bleed, and<br />

his daughter Fstimah and her husband '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib (may Allah<br />

be pleased with both) treated his wounds and stopped the flow <strong>of</strong><br />

blood that was running down his face and beard (@J3"
