276 '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib at the time <strong>of</strong> the Rightly Guided Caliphs<br />

dispute, saying that the people divided into two groups, the party <strong>of</strong><br />

Banu Umayyah and the party <strong>of</strong> Banu Hbhim. This is an imaginary<br />

idea and incorrect conclusion for which there is no evidence at all,<br />

because that is not the kind <strong>of</strong> atmosphere in which the Companions<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) were living where one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Muhijiroon would stand with an An@i against his own father or<br />

brother or cousin or tribe. It ignores the fact that these Companions<br />

are the ones who sacrificed all worldly gains in order to protect their<br />

religion. It is not based on sound knowledge <strong>of</strong> these elite who had<br />

been given the glad tidings <strong>of</strong> paradise. There are many events in<br />

their lives which prove that these people were far above looking at<br />

things from such a narrow perspective when dealing with their<br />

affairs. It was not a matter <strong>of</strong> family or tribal representation; they<br />

were appointed to the consultative council because <strong>of</strong> their status in<br />

Islam.<br />

3.2.3. Words that were falsely attributed to '<strong>Ali</strong> (&)<br />

lhn Katheer said: "What is said by many historians, such as<br />

lbu Jareer and others, who narrated from unknown men about '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

(4) saying to 'Abdur-RaFmiin: 'You deceived me; you only<br />

appointed him because he is related to you through marriage and so<br />

that he would seek your advice every day,' and that he did not swear<br />

allegiance to 'Uthmh (&>) until 'Abdur-Ramin ibn 'Awf said,<br />

d~erily, those who give Bay 'ah[pledge] to you [O Muhammad] they<br />

are giving Bay 'ah [pledge] to Allah. The Hand <strong>of</strong> Allah is over their<br />

hands. Then whosoever breaks his pledge, breaks it only to his own<br />

harm; and whosoever fulfils what he has covenanted with Allah, He<br />

will bestow on him a great reward) (Qur'an 48: 10) is false."<br />

There are other reports that are contrary to what is proven in<br />

the books <strong>of</strong> authentic hadiths; they are to be rejected and thrown<br />

back at those who narrate them. And Allah (g) knows best. What is
