taken from the Muslims who were present whatever was needed to<br />

shroud him completely. lo'<br />

9. The shroud <strong>of</strong> a man and a woman,<br />

and not going to extremes in that<br />

It is Sunnah to shroud a man in three pieces <strong>of</strong> cloth and to<br />

shroud a woman in five, according to '<strong>Ali</strong> (&). That was narrated<br />

from him by d-Kas2ui and others.lo2 Going to extremes in shrouding<br />

is detested; according to '<strong>Ali</strong> (&), this means using more than three<br />

pieces <strong>of</strong> cloth for a man and more than five for a woman."3 Amir d-<br />

Mn'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) said: "The shroud <strong>of</strong> a woman is five pieces <strong>of</strong><br />

cloth, and the shroud <strong>of</strong> a man is three, and transgress not. Verily,<br />

10. Washing and shrouding <strong>of</strong> the martyr<br />

The martyr is not to be washed or shrouded, according to '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

(&). That was narrated from him by d-Kas2ni and others.Io6 It was<br />

narrated that he did not wash those who were killed fighting<br />

alongside him against those who opposed him, and he did not instnrct<br />

that they should he shrouded. He buried 'Ammir (&) without<br />

washing him.'07 This is the view <strong>of</strong> the majority <strong>of</strong> scholars, apart<br />

from al-Hasan d-Basri and Sa'eed ihn d-Musayyab, whose view is<br />

that the deceased is in a state <strong>of</strong> impurity and needs to he purified by<br />

water.'08<br />

Rulings on ZakSh<br />

1. There is no zaksh due on wealth until one<br />

full year has passed, according to the Islamic calendar<br />

Amir al-Mu'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) stated that the passing <strong>of</strong> one<br />

full year is a condition <strong>of</strong> zak& being obligatory, because it was<br />

narrated from him (&)that he said: "No zak& is due on wealth until
