3.3.14. A woman who killed her husband<br />

on her wedding day in the presence<br />

<strong>of</strong> her male friend<br />

At the time <strong>of</strong> '<strong>Ali</strong> (&), a woman killed her husband on her<br />

wedding day in the presence <strong>of</strong> her male friend, and the punishment<br />

was execution in retaliation for the crime.313<br />

3.3.15. Substituting something else for camels<br />

when paying the compensation for death,<br />

and how it is to be paid<br />

The basic principle is that the compensation for death is to be<br />

paid in the form <strong>of</strong> camels, but it is permissible to give something else<br />

if camels are not available, according to 'AJi (&). It was narrated<br />

from '~mir that '<strong>Ali</strong>, Abdullah and Zayd said: "The compensation is<br />

one hundred camels."314 It was narrated from d-Hasan that '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

ruled that the compensation should be twelve<br />

referring<br />

to dirham <strong>of</strong> silver.<br />

In the case <strong>of</strong> accidental or quasi intentional killing, it is to he<br />

paid by the male relatives <strong>of</strong> the killer in instabnents over three years,<br />

according to Amir al-Mu'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> T2lib (&).316 The<br />

evidence for that is the report narrated from d-Mugheerah ibn<br />

Shn'bah, who said: "The Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (@) ruled that the<br />

compensation is to be paid by the male relatives."317 As for paying it<br />

in instalments, that is because it is a large amount and it is difficult to<br />

pay it all at once. It is divided into instalments paid over three years,<br />

based on the principle <strong>of</strong> making things easy, which is enjoined in<br />
