5.2.2. Poetry that was composed<br />

on the heroism <strong>of</strong> '<strong>Ali</strong> at Badr<br />

On the day <strong>of</strong> Badr, the banner <strong>of</strong> the polytheists was with<br />

Talhah, who was killed by '<strong>Ali</strong>. Al-Hajj2j ibn 'All2t as-Sularni<br />

composed poetry to mark this event.<br />

5.3. The marriage <strong>of</strong> '<strong>Ali</strong> to FStimah<br />

(may Allah be pleased with them both)<br />

She was Ficimah the daughter <strong>of</strong> the leader <strong>of</strong> the pious and<br />

master <strong>of</strong> the sons <strong>of</strong> Adam, the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (B), and her<br />

mother was Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid (I&), and her kunyah was<br />

Umm beeh ha.^'^ She was born before the Prophet's mission began,<br />

when the Prophet (g) was 35 years old.318 The Prophet (&) gave her<br />

in marriage to '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Taib (&) in 2 AH, after the battle <strong>of</strong><br />

Badr, and she bore him al-Hasan, al-Husayn and Umm Kulthoom.<br />

She died six months after the death <strong>of</strong> the Prophet (g); may Allah be<br />

pleased with her and make her pleased.319<br />

5.3.1. Her dowry and trousseau<br />

'<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> T2lib (&,) said: "Proposals were made to the<br />

Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) for Fitimah. A freed slave woman <strong>of</strong> mine<br />

said: 'Do yon know that <strong>of</strong>fers are being made to the Messenger <strong>of</strong><br />

Allah (g) for Etimah?' I said: 'No.' She said: 'Offers have been<br />

made. What is preventing you from going to the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah<br />

(g) so that he might give her to you in marriage?' I said: 'Do I have<br />

anything with which to get manied?' She said: 'If you go to the<br />

Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g), he will accept your proposal.' By Allah, she<br />

kept encouraging me until I entered upon the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah<br />

(g). When I sat before him, I could not speak, out <strong>of</strong> awe and<br />

respect. The Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) . said: 'What brings you here?
