166 '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> <strong>Talib</strong> in Makkah<br />

Qaynuq?; Qurayw came alter the battle <strong>of</strong> the trench, and<br />

Khaybar came after ~uda~bi~ah."~~~ <strong>Ibn</strong> al-'Arabi said: "The<br />

correct view is that it was after Ulpd."401 This was also the opinion<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Ibn</strong> ~atheer.~" In this battle, the Companions (may Allah be<br />

pleased with them) did not know where '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib was one<br />

night, and the Prophet (B) said: "He is on a mission on your behalf."<br />

Soon after that, he brought the head <strong>of</strong> 'Azwak. He had lain in wait<br />

for him until he came out with a group <strong>of</strong> Jews seeking to catch the<br />

Muslims unaware and attack them. He was brave and a good archer,<br />

but '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) ,., attacked him and killed him, and the Jews fled.403<br />

5.9. '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) at the Battle <strong>of</strong> Hamra' al-Asad<br />

This battle is regarded as the completion <strong>of</strong> the Battle <strong>of</strong> mud.<br />

The Muslims returned from Uhud on Saturday evening, 15 Shawwil<br />

3 AH, and the next morning the people bad just left the dawn prayer<br />

when the announcer <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) announced that<br />

they should get ready quickly to pursue the enemy, and that only<br />

those who had been at mud should go out. The people responded to<br />

the call <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) despite their wounds and<br />

exhaustion, and foremost among them was the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah<br />

himself (g). He did not allow Abdullah ibn Ubayy to go out with<br />

him, nor did he allow anyone who had not been present at mud,<br />

except Jgbir ibn Abdullah ibn 'Am ibn Harh; his father was<br />

martyred at Uhud, and his father had prevented him from taking part<br />

at Badr and Uhud so that he could stay with his young sisters. The<br />

army went out, led by the Messenger <strong>of</strong> AUah (g). The banner <strong>of</strong><br />

mud itsell was carried by '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> lib.^" The Muslims, led by<br />

reached Hamra' al-Asad, which was<br />

their noble Messenger (g),<br />

thirteen miles from adi in ah, and camped there. This manoeuvre<br />

surprised the Jews and the hypocrites because <strong>of</strong> its courage and<br />

daring, and they became certain that the Muslim morale was high,
