256 '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib at the time <strong>of</strong> the Rightly Guided Caliphs<br />

to consult advisers and not act like dictators, forcing their opinions on<br />

others. In many cases, '<strong>Ali</strong> (4) retracted his opinion and followed<br />

that <strong>of</strong> 'Umar It was narrated from 'kishah (@) that she<br />

said about 'Umar (&): "<strong>Ali</strong> (&) used to follow the opinion <strong>of</strong><br />

'Umar ibn d-Khagb with regard to what 'Umar thought was right,<br />

even though 'Umar frequently consulted '<strong>Ali</strong>, to such an extent that<br />

'Mi ( ) said: "Umar consulted me about such and such; my<br />

opinion was such and such, and his opinion was such and such, but<br />

ultimately I decided to follow 'Umar's view."""<br />

2.4. '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) and his children,<br />

and their relationship with 'Umar<br />

(may Allah be pleased with them all)<br />

'Umar (&) had such great respect for the family <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Messenger <strong>of</strong> AUah a) that be preferred them to his own sons and<br />

family. We will mention a few examples:<br />

2.4.1. "You are more deserving <strong>of</strong> permission<br />

to enter than Abdullah ibn 'Umar"<br />

Among the things narrated by al-Husayn ibn '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) was:<br />

"Umar said to me one day: '0 my son, why don't you visit us and<br />

spend time with us? So I came one day and found him on his own<br />

with Mu'iwiyah, <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Umar was at the door and had not been given<br />

permission to enter, so I went back. He met me after that and said: '0<br />

my son, why did I not see you coming to visit us?' I said: 'I came, but<br />

you were on your own with Mu'iwiyah, and I saw that <strong>Ibn</strong> 'Umar<br />

was not given permission to enter, so I went back.' He said: 'You are<br />

more deserving <strong>of</strong> permission to enter than Abdullah ibn 'Umat. All<br />

the blessings that we are enjoying, as you see, are because <strong>of</strong> Allah<br />

(g), then you [the Prophet a) and Ah1 d-~a~t].'"'~~
