during the caliphate <strong>of</strong> Mu'iwiyah. In Tareekh al-Bukhari al-A~ghar<br />

it is mentioned with a sound chain that he died at the beginning <strong>of</strong><br />

Yazeed's caliphate, before the battle <strong>of</strong> al-~arrah~', at the age <strong>of</strong><br />

ninety-six!'<br />

(c) Ja'far ibn Ahi T%b: Ja'far was one <strong>of</strong> the earliest Muslims. He<br />

loved the poor and sat in their company, Se~ed them and conversed<br />

with them. He migrated to Abyssinia, where the Negus and those<br />

who followed him became Muslim at his hands. I have discussed him<br />

in my book as-Seerah an-Nabawiyyah: 'Arad Waqi'i' wa Tahleel<br />

Ahdrith (The Prophet's Biography: Events and Analysis). He was<br />

maayred fighting bravely at Mu'tah in greater ~ ~ria.6~<br />

(d) Umm HW bint <strong>Abi</strong> Tsib: The female paternal cousin <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Prophet (a). It was said that her name was Fmtah or Fiemah or<br />

Hind, but the frst is better known. She was the wife <strong>of</strong> Hnbayrah ibn<br />

'Am ibn 'kidh al-Makhzoomi, and she bore him 'Am, from whom<br />

he took his kunyah. At the conquest <strong>of</strong> Makkah, Umm Hi%' granted<br />

protection to two men from Banu Makhzoom, and the Messenger <strong>of</strong><br />

Allah (g) said: "Those to whom you grant protection, we grant<br />

protection, 0 Umm Hhi'." Umm Hhi' narrated hadiths from the<br />

Prophet (g) which are recorded in the six books and elsewhere as<br />

~ell.6~ ~t:~irmidhi and others said that she lived longer than '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

(e) Jumhah bint <strong>Abi</strong> Tab: She is also known as Umm Abdullah ibn<br />

<strong>Abi</strong> Sufyin ibn al-H2rith ibn 'Abdul-Munalib. She was mentioned<br />

by <strong>Ibn</strong> Sa'd iu his biography <strong>of</strong> her mother Ficimah bint Asad, in his<br />

chapter on the female paternal cousins <strong>of</strong> the Prophet (@I. She bore<br />

Abu Sufyk ibn al-Hikith his son Ja'far ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Sufyh, and the<br />

Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) gave her thirty wasqs <strong>of</strong> dates from<br />

~ha~bar.~"
