it, meaning except that which you are able to catch up with and<br />

slaughter (before it dies), in which case it is permissible to eat it.lS7<br />

2. Meat slaughtered by Arab Christians<br />

It is not permissible to eat meat slaughtered by Arab<br />

Christians, unlike other Christians, according to '<strong>Ali</strong> (&). That was<br />

narrated from him by at-Tabari and others.158 It was narrated that<br />

'Ubaydah as-Salm2ni said: "Meat slaughtered by Arab Christians<br />

should not be eaten, because they know nothing <strong>of</strong> Christianity<br />

except drinking alcohol."L59 According to another report: "Do not<br />

eat meat slaughtered by the Christians <strong>of</strong> Banu Taghlib, because they<br />

do not adhere to anything <strong>of</strong> Christianity except drinking<br />

alcoh01."'~~ He quoted as evidence for that the fact that they did not<br />

adhere to the teachings <strong>of</strong> Christianity with regard to commands and<br />

prohibitions, so they were not to be regarded as being Christians.<br />

However, when Allah ($&) permitted eating meat slaughtered<br />

by them, it was a time when the Christians had deviated from the<br />

original teachings <strong>of</strong> Christianity, whether that was with regard to<br />

doctrines or rulings, and that did not prevent it being made<br />

permissible to eat their meat. This was the view <strong>of</strong> the majority <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Companions and jurists.16'<br />

3. Meat slaughtered for glory<br />

It is harh to eat meat which was slaughtered for glory,<br />

according to '<strong>Ali</strong> (&). It was narrated that alJarood ibn Ahi Sabrah<br />

said: "There was a man from Banu Riy& who was called <strong>Ibn</strong><br />

Washeel - and his name was Saeem - who was a prominent poet.<br />

Abu Farazdaq bet him that he could slaughter one hundred <strong>of</strong> his<br />

camels when they came to the watering place outside Kufab. When<br />

the camels came, they both took their swords and started to slaughter<br />

them. The people came wanting the meat. '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) was in<br />

Kufah, and he came out riding the mule <strong>of</strong> the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah
