clothes.' So she brought it out from her braided hair, and we brought<br />

it to the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g). In it (was written): 'From Hitib ibn<br />

<strong>Abi</strong> Balta'ah to some <strong>of</strong> the polytheists <strong>of</strong> Makkah,' telling them<br />

something about the plans <strong>of</strong> Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g). The<br />

Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) said: '0 Hitib, what is this?' He said: 'Do<br />

not be hasty in judging me, 0 Messenger <strong>of</strong> AUah. I am a man who<br />

was connected to Quraysh, but I was not one <strong>of</strong> them. The<br />

Muhijireen with you have relatives who will protect their families in<br />

Makkah. I have no blood ties among them, so I wanted to do them a<br />

favour so that they would protect my family. I did not do it out <strong>of</strong><br />

disbelief, or because I apostatized from my religion, or because I<br />

approved <strong>of</strong> disbelief after becoming Muslim.' The Messenger <strong>of</strong><br />

AUah (g) said: 'He has spoken the truth.' 'Umar said: '0 Messenger<br />

<strong>of</strong> ~llah, let me strike the neck <strong>of</strong> this hypocrite.' The Messenger <strong>of</strong><br />

Allah (&) said: 'He was present at Badr, and you do not know,<br />

perhapshah (&) looked upon the people <strong>of</strong> Badr and said: Do<br />

what you wish, for I have forgiven you. ,,,469<br />

6.6.2. We grant protection to the one<br />

to whom Umm HM granted protection<br />

Umm Hhi' bint <strong>Abi</strong> Tilib, the sister <strong>of</strong> '<strong>Ali</strong> (may Allah be<br />

pleased with them both) said: "When the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g)<br />

camped in the upper part <strong>of</strong> Makkah, two men among my in-laws,<br />

from Banu Makhzoom, fled to me." She was married to Hubayrah<br />

ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Wahb d-Makhzoomi. She said: " '<strong>Ali</strong> ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Tsib, my<br />

brother, entered upon me and said: 'By Allah, I will kill them.' I<br />

locked the door <strong>of</strong> my house on them, then I came to the Messenger<br />

<strong>of</strong> Allah (a) when he was in the upper part <strong>of</strong> Makkah. I found him<br />

washing himself (making ghusl) from a vessel in which there was a<br />

trace <strong>of</strong> dough, and his daughter Fi~ah<br />

was screening him with his<br />

gannent. When he had finished washing, he took his garment and put
