praying [with the verse]: $So be patient [O Muhammad]. Verily, the<br />

Promise <strong>of</strong> Allah is true; and let not those who have no certainty <strong>of</strong><br />

Faith discourage yon from conveying AUah's Message [which you<br />

are obliged to convey]B (Qsr'an 30: 60).18*<br />

These are some <strong>of</strong> the basic principles followed by Amir al-<br />

Mn'mineen '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) in deriving rulings from the noble Qur'an and<br />

understanding its meanings. From his example, those who love him<br />

and the sincere Muslims can learn how to interact with the Book <strong>of</strong><br />

Allah (g).<br />

3.6. '<strong>Ali</strong>'s interpretation <strong>of</strong><br />

some verses <strong>of</strong> the Qur'an<br />

3.6.1. Adh-Dl12riy2t [soorah 511<br />

It was narrated from ath-Thawri, from Habeeb ibn <strong>Abi</strong> Thiibit,<br />

that Abu at-Tufayl said: I heard fin al-Kawwa' ask '<strong>Ali</strong> ihn <strong>Abi</strong> Taib<br />

about al-dh&riyritu dhanvan p y (the winds) that scatter dust]. He<br />

said: The winds. He asked him about al-hcimilritu waqran [And (the<br />

clouds) that bear heavy weight <strong>of</strong> water]. He said: The clouds. He<br />

asked hi about wal- jririyciti yusran [And (the ships) that float with<br />

ease and gentleness]. He said: The ships. He asked him about almudnbbirriti<br />

amran [And those (angels) who distribute (provisions,<br />

rain, and other blessings) by (Allah's) Command]. He said: The<br />

angels.189 Al-H%m classed this report as sound with a different<br />

chain <strong>of</strong> narration from Abu at-Tnfayl.<br />

Af-Tabari mentioned in detail the different chains <strong>of</strong> narration<br />

going back to '~1i.l~' It was also narrated by 'Abdur-Razziiq with a<br />

different chain <strong>of</strong> narration from Abu at-Tnfayl, who said: I saw '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

when he was giving a sermon. He said: "Ask me, ask me about the<br />

Book <strong>of</strong> Allah, for by Allah, there is no verse but 1 know whether it
