guide ..." So the Prophet &) .> swore, although he was not<br />

asked to swear. The point here is that he was encouraging<br />

'<strong>Ali</strong>(4)<br />

so that Allah would guide people through him,<br />

and confirming this idea. Allah commanded His Messenger<br />

to swear in three places in the Qur'an, where He said:<br />

(B)<br />

(And they ask you [O Muhammad] to inform them<br />

[saying]: 'Isit true [i.e. the torment and the estahlishment <strong>of</strong><br />

the Hour - the Day <strong>of</strong> Resurrection]?' Say: 'Yes! By my<br />

Lord! It is the very truth! ...' b (Qur'an 10: 53); (The<br />

disbelievers pretend that they will never be resurrected [for<br />

the Account]. Say [0 Muhammad]: 'Yes! By my Lord, you<br />

will certainly be resurrected.# (Qur'an 64: 7) and B'I'hose<br />

who disbelieve say: 'The Hour will not come to us.' Say:<br />

'Yes, by my Lord, the Al-Knower <strong>of</strong> the Unseen, it will<br />

come to you# (Qur'an 34: 3). If there is any interest to he<br />

served by swearing an oath, or any question to be answered,<br />

then it is permissible and may even he required.466<br />

6.6. '<strong>Ali</strong> at the conquest <strong>of</strong> Makkah<br />

and the campaign <strong>of</strong> Hunayn, 8 AH<br />

Quraysh broke their treaty with the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g)<br />

when they supplied Banu Bakr with horses, weapons and men, thus<br />

supporting them against Khuzi'ah, who were allies <strong>of</strong> the Muslims.<br />

The Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (g) said: "You will be supported, O 'Amr<br />

ibn Ssim, and may AUah never help me if I do not help Banu Ka'b."<br />

Then as a cloud appeared in the sky, he said: 'This cloud will provide<br />

help for Banu ~a'h."~~~ 'Amr ihn S h came to Madinah and<br />

recited an ode before the Messenger <strong>of</strong> Allah (gJ, in which he said:<br />

0 Lord, I come to remind Muhammad<br />

<strong>of</strong> the old alliance between our fathers.<br />

You are sons for whom we provided the mother,
