books.'" <strong>Ibn</strong> Sa'd narrated nine reports via al-W2qidi about the<br />

consultative committee, the oath <strong>of</strong> allegiance to 'Uthmiin (&) and<br />

the story <strong>of</strong> how he was appointed caliph.205 He narrated another<br />

report via 'Ubaydullah ibn Moosa that included the murder <strong>of</strong> 'Umar<br />

(&), his limiting the committee to six men, his advice to both '<strong>Ali</strong><br />

and 'Uthmiin if either <strong>of</strong> them were to be appointed caliph, and his<br />

advice to Suhayb regarding this matter?06<br />

Al-Baliidhuri narrated reports about the committee and the<br />

oath <strong>of</strong> allegiance to 'Uthmiin (&) from Abu MakhnafZo7, from<br />

Hishh al-Kalbi (some <strong>of</strong> which was quoted from Abu Makhnaf and<br />

some <strong>of</strong> which was narrated only by him)208, from al-~i~idi'~~<br />

and<br />

from 'Ubaydullah ibn Moosa?" At-Tabari based his version <strong>of</strong> this<br />

story on a number <strong>of</strong> reports, such as that <strong>of</strong> Abu Makhnaf?" lbn<br />

<strong>Abi</strong>l-Hadeed narrated some <strong>of</strong> the events via Ahmad ibn 'Abdul-<br />

'Azeez al-~awhari,~" and he mentioned that he was quoting from the<br />

book ash-Shoora by al-~2~idi."~ The Sbia reports include a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> interpolations for which there is no sound evidence, including:<br />

3.2.1. Accusation against the Companions <strong>of</strong><br />

favouritism in issues concerning the Muslims<br />

The RZdi Shia reports accuse the Companions <strong>of</strong> favomitism<br />

in issues conceming the Muslims and suggest that '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) was not<br />

happy about 'Abdur-Ralpn% choosing the caliph. It was narrated by<br />

Abu Makhnaf and Hishim al-Kalbi, from his father and &mad al-<br />

Jawhari, that 'Umar (&) gave the deciding vote, in the event <strong>of</strong> an<br />

equal split, to 'Abdur-R- ibn 'Awf, so '<strong>Ali</strong> (&) realized that<br />

the caliphate had slipped from his grasp because 'Abdur-Remiin<br />

would choose 'Uthmk (&), to whom he was related by<br />

marriage?14 However, <strong>Ibn</strong> Taymiyah denied that there was any close<br />

relationship by blood between 'Uthmiin and 'Abdur-Rw. He<br />

said: "Abdur-RWk was not a brother or cousin <strong>of</strong> 'Uthmk, and he
